Gardeners Question Time - Plant Chooser - Bob Flowerdew - Gardening

Gardeners Question Time - Plant Chooser - Bob Flowerdew - Gardening

Category: Books
Description: This book has a week by week approach, detailing species and varieties of plants when they are at their best in the year. John loves the cones on the Korean Fir in January, Bunny admires the Lenten Rose in March, Matthew is beguiled by the 'sleek willowy elegance' of the Corn Cockle in May, Bob celebrates the Victoria Plum at the beginning of September - the voices of the authors are clearly heard throughout, making this not only a valuable reference, but a personal, opinionated conversation with some of Britain's favourite gardeners. Each comprehensive entry gives the plant's preferred soil and situation, its hardiness, eventual height and spread, flowering season and special features and, most importantly, the reason the author believes this to be a fantastic addition to the garden.

The Resilient Garden - Marylyn Abbott - Gardening

The Resilient Garden - Marylyn Abbott - Gardening

Category: Books
Description: Weather patterns are changing - earlier springs, record summer temperatures and erratic rainfall. And even when it is raining, we still have to be aware of conserving water. From her gardens in the dry heat of Australia and the wet of Hampshire, Marylyn Abbott has learnt about plant behavior in these conditions and divulges her knowledge in this aptly timed book. She focuses on the dry gardens that work and why, how to create illusions of water, how to care for dry climate plants, and create the right conditions (including mulches to conserve water, plant groupings, preparation of plants) and drainage for the times when it suddenly pours and pours. Together with a list of beautiful plants that will 'weather well', this is both a practical and inspirational read.

Mr Hamiltons Elysium - Michael Symes - Gardening

Category: Books
Description: The Hon. Charles Hamilton was one of those extraordinary eighteenth-century gentlemen who, like Lord Cobham at Stowe and Henry Hoare at Stourhead, turned their gardens into works of art. Inspired by his time in Italy, Hamilton set out to transform the 'accursed hill' at Painshill in Surrey into a pictorial landscape complete with serpentine lake and water wheel, Turkish Tent, 'Chinese Bridge', Ruined Abbey, Grotto and Hermitage. The garden soon ranked with the best in the land but it later lay forgotten until rediscovered in the 1970s. The restoration over the last thirty years or so has been as careful and dramatic as any. Now Painshill Park is visited by thousands and even the famous vineyard is flourishing again. This book is fully illustrated with archive images and wonderful photographs of the park and its amazing buildings.

Lifeless - Mark Billingham - Crime and Thriller

Category: Books
Description: To his friends, his foes and even to himself it looks as though Tom Thorne's career is on the skids. On his last case he had seriously over-stepped the mark, and now gardening leave has been suggested and all he has to tend is a window box. So when it appears someone is targeting London's homeless community it seems pefectly natural for Thorne to take a step nearer to the gutter and go undercover amongst them. He blends into the sometimes invisble community easily - too easily perhaps - but the information he gleans quickly proves that this is no random killer, it is someone with a very distinct purpose and a very specific list of victims, only the team supporting Thorne from the outside don't have the key to motive or identity. Then somehow the fact that a policeman is working under cover becomes public knowledge ...With acute observation of character and place, combined with his acknowledged mastery of plotting, LIFELESS raises the Thorne series to an even higher level.

The Gardens Of Madeira - Gerald Luckhurst - Gardening

Category: Books
Description: Attracting over a million visitors each year, the island gardens of Madeira are unique. For centuries Madeira was at the crossroads of the world - half-way between the tropics and the old continent. The islanders were poised to receive plants from far-flung empires and accommodate ideas from both north and south. In such a climate, growth is phenomenal and streets and squares are filled with magnificent trees (jacarandas, flame-trees and rosewoods) let alone the oozing dragon trees. Some thirty gardens in and around the capital, Funchal, and further afield as well as some of the unique native flora and landscape are expertly described. Luckhurst also explores the discovery and development of the island and its earliest gardens, and the role of Portuguese aristocrats and British wine merchants in creating the country estates known as quintas.

It features over 50 inspirational ideas for using fresh and dried lavender throughout the home. It includes over 300 glorious, specially commissioned photographs of lavender through the seasons, in and out of the home. Lavender is one of the most beloved herbs in the garden. With an introduction on its history and folklore and a whole chapter on how to cultivate, nurture and dry lavender, this book is not merely a celebration but a wealth of information and fascinating detail. Illustrated with fabulous specially commissioned photographs, this book is a unique evocation of one of our most beautiful plants: one that has been loved for centuries, carried and cultivated around the world, and prized for its unique properties and enchanting aromatic powers.

This Is The Garden - Charles Elliott - Anthologies Essays Letters and Miscellaneous

Category: Books
Description: From Homer to Tom Stoppard, writers whose direct concern with gardening may only be slight, find themselves deeply involved with particular, maybe imaginary gardens. Thus gardens turn up in the most surprising contexts, from 10th century Japan to the more familiar world of 19th and 20th century English literature. Gardens are used as settings, they are contemplated and described, they are engaged with metaphorically, and they are employed as emotional registers by authors as various as Goethe and Jerome K Jerome, Somerset Maugham and James I; to say nothing of Charlotte Bronte or ee cumming. And in this anthology the legendary editor and garden writer Charles Elliott has chosen a nicely suggestive collection of such encounters from all over the world and all ages to delight, to entertain and to inform. Happy and sad, comic and serious, reassuring and threatening, the garden is seen here by over 100 great writers as one of mankind's most interesting, most useful and most variable creations.

Popular authors increase output, some doubling to two books a year, to meet insatiable ebook demand
Pity the poor authors in the days of the ebook. Whereas popular authors such as Lisa Scottoline used to produce one book a year, now they are writing two; while others such as Lee Child are churning out short stories in between novels in an attempt to satisfy their fans' demands for more output, lest the fans get bored waiting for the next work and go off and find a new favorite. Meanwhile, James Patterson is producing a dozen or more books each year, about half of which are co-written.

All this at the same time as the internet has changed readers' expectations that they'll be able to hear personally from their favorite authors via blogs, Twitter and Facebook updates.

Would reclusive authors such as J.D. Salinger and Harper Lee be able to gain traction in today's market? Many publishers say no - that what once would have created an aura of intrigue around an author, is not a viable option in the age of interconnectivity.

Pushing back against 'Showrooming', Target will no longer stock Kindles
Target plans to stop selling Amazon Kindle e-readers and tablets, and has already removed the products from its website.

"This is evidence that Target is getting more serious about Amazon as an enemy rather than a partner," said analyst Matt Nemer of Wells Fargo. "That's probably something Target now regrets. It put them behind in the world of multi-channel retail and let a serious competitor learn a lot about their business."

The New York Times reported that as retailers like Target address the challenge of "showrooming," carrying Amazon's Kindle is, as Michael Norris of Simba Information put it, "like Starbucks selling Dunkin' Donuts gift certificates."

Showrooming is the term used to describe a shopper who visits a store to check out a product but then purchases the product online from a different retailer - booksellers report that they often see customers buying online while still standing in their store holding the book they are purchasing elsewhere!

Tor publisher announces all ebooks will be DRM free by July - enabling books to be transferred between devices
Tom Doherty Associates - comprising the Tor, Forge, Orb, Starscape, and Tor Teen imprints - has announced that their entire list of ebooks will be available DRM-free "by early July." In a separate, following notice, Tor UK said that it will do the same. Digital rights management (DRM) is the term used to describe any technology that limits the use of digital content on devices after sale.

President and publisher Tom Doherty writes: "Our authors and readers have been asking for this for a long time. They're a technically sophisticated bunch, and DRM is a constant annoyance to them. It prevents them from using legitimately-purchased e-books in perfectly legal ways, like moving them from one kind of e-reader to another." The company says that as part of the move, they "expect to begin selling titles through retailers that sell only DRM-free books."

Forsaking DRM, and/or experimenting with "lighter" DRM schemes that allow more customer freedom, has been under discussion at a number of houses recently, intensified in the wake of the agency pricing lawsuits and settlements. Tor/Forge are the first "Big Six" imprints to make this move, though Pottermore's recent release of DRM-free Harry Potter ebooks (watermarked in some versions; still encrypted if purchased for the Kindle or Nook platforms) remains the most prominent. The Tor move raises the likelihood that other big publishers will head in the same direction, and also increases the chance that they may do so by division or imprint rather than companywide.

'Three Cups of Tea' author, Greg Mortenson, and publisher seek dismissal of class action suit
At a federal court hearing this week, author Greg Mortenson and his publisher sought dismissal of a lawsuit that "aims to obtain class-action relief for book-buyers allegedly defrauded by purported fabrications" in Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools.

According to the NY Times, the class-action case "is potentially crucial for book publishers, the defendants argue, because if it succeeds - which is by no means certain - it could mean that publishers would be liable to defend lawsuits and reimburse readers every time a memoir turned out to have an inflated recollection of events."

Attorneys for Penguin Group, which published Three Cups of Tea in 2006, contended that "if a publisher were required to guarantee or ensure the truth and accuracy of everything an author says, the costs of publishing books would be prohibitive."

Apple wants to go to trial to defend itself against price-fixing allegations
Apple wants to go to trial to defend itself against U.S. government allegations of colluding with publishers to fix e-book prices, Apple lawyer Daniel Floyd told U.S. District Judge Denise Cote yesterday. Reuters reported that publishers Macmillan and Penguin "took a similar stance in the first hearing in Manhattan federal court since the anti-trust division of the Department of Justice last week accused Apple and five publishers of colluding to break up Amazon.com's low-cost dominance of the digital book market."
