Worldwide Gothic - Natasha Scharf - Popular Culture and Media: General Interest

Category: Books
Description: This is the first book to look at the impact of the goth scene worldwide, from its origins right through to the present day. From the UK's sprawling post-punk scene, Japan's highly visual movement, the USA's deathrock explosion and Germany's extremely popular Schwarze Szene, Worldwide Gothic explores how they all came about and the influence they've had on contemporary music and fashion. Spat out of punk at the tail end of the 1970s, goth became a major subculture in the UK with bands like Siouxsie And The Banshees and The Sisters Of Mercy scoring Top Ten hits and its fashion inspiring catwalk collections. After the scene died down in the early 1990s, it spread out to Europe where it attracted hundreds of thousands of followers and became assimilated with other muscial genres. This book also looks at how goth is now returning to its roots now with the emergence of dark rock and indie bands who pay homage to gothic greats like Bauhaus and Joy Division.

The Tale Of Samuel Whiskers Or The Roly-poly Pudding - Beatrix Potter - Picture Books

Category: Books
Description: It's been 110 years since Frederick Warne published Beatrix Potter's very first book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, and in celebration, we are delighted to be publishing special editions of her entire body of work. Unlike the traditional little white books, these editions have delightful colourful covers and specially designed endpapers. And to make them extra special, we have included a publisher's note to tell you all about the history of how each book came to be. The first farm that Beatrix Potter owned, Hill Top, was an old house with thick walls and many hiding places for rats and mice. In The Tale of Samuel Whiskers, this farmhouse is Tom Kitten's home and the story tells what happens when Tom accidentally comes upon the rat Samuel Whiskers living in a secret hideout behind the attic walls. The Tale of Samuel Whiskers is number 16 in Beatrix Potter's series of 23 little books.

The Department Store - Jan Whitaker - Regional History

Category: Books
Description: Where, under one roof, can shoppers find Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen? And where, besides the great department stores of Europe, Japan and America, is it possible for shoppers to spend the day in an extraordinarily opulent setting, drifting from shoes to cosmetics with a stop for a light lunch on the seventh floor and a visit to the bookstore, florist or hairdresser? This is the first illustrated book on department stores, with photographs and ephemera collected from all over the world. Born in the Gilded Age in France, the department store grew up thanks to the Industrial Revolution, the rise of the middle classes, and the invention of steel-frame architecture and the elevator. This lavish book goes behind the fabulous window displays, eye-catching shopping bags and instore extravaganzas promoting everything from shoes to perfumes to the latest fashion sensation to reveal and celebrate the department store in richness and detail.

Aids At 30 - Victoria A. Harden - Social Issues Services and Welfare

Category: Books
Description: This title examines the heroic efforts to pinpoint the cause of HIV/AIDS. It shows how doctors, researchers, and other professionals have struggled to find a cure. It reveals the medical science behind the most terrifying global epidemic of our time. Society was not prepared in 1981 for the appearance of a new infectious disease, but we have since learned that emerging and re-emerging diseases will continue to challenge humanity. AIDS at 30: A History is the first history of HIV/AIDS written for a general audience that emphasizes the medical response to this epidemic. This book approaches the AIDS virus from philosophical and intellectual perspectives in the history of medical science. Forgoing the usual narrative about who 'discovered' the AIDS virus, it discusses the process of scientific discovery, scientific evidence, and how laboratories found the cause of AIDS and developed therapeutic interventions. Similarly, this book places AIDS as the first infectious disease to be recognized simultaneously worldwide as a single phenomenon. After years of believing that vaccines and antibiotics would keep deadly epidemics away, researchers, doctors, patients, and the public were forced to abandon the arrogant assumption that they had conquered infectious diseases. By presenting an accessible discussion of the history of HIV/AIDS and analyzing how aspects of society advanced or hindered the response to the disease, this book shows how medicine identifies and evaluates new infectious diseases quickly and what factors limit medicine's response.

Teach Yourself Living In France - Monique Perceau - Language Learning: Self Study

Category: Books
Description: Looking for a guide to the practicalities of living in France? Whether you need to know how to find a plumber, what the mairie is there for or how to get permission to renovate, this practical illustrated book is for you. And its accompanying CD gives you all the language skills you need to communicate with the locals. It is estimated that at least half a million Brits now own houses in France and that around 100,000 are buying, looking for, or at least thinking seriously about, a (second) home in France. Every home owner has to go through the process of searching for property and buying it; most new and existing owners will be renovating or redecorating at some point and this will involve dealing with tradesmen and/or suppliers. For this, these homebuyers will need to understand at least the basics of French property law, house construction, building, plumbing, electrical systems etc, and they need to know not only the words but how the systems work. Living in France gives the explanations and vocabulary for each aspect of finding, buying, renovating and living in a house in France. In addition to approximately 120 labelled illustrations, the book has a CD which gives the pronunciation and practice of the necessary vocabulary.

The Art Of The Hobbit - Christina Scull - Design and Commercial Art

Category: Books
Description: To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, a sumptuous full colour art book containing the complete collection of more than 100 Hobbit sketches, drawings, paintings and maps by J.R.R. Tolkien. When J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, he was already an accomplished amateur artist, and drew illustrations for his book while it was still in manuscript. The Hobbit as first printed had ten black and white pictures, two maps, and binding and dust-jacket designs by its author. Later, Tolkien also painted five scenes for colour plates which are some of his best work. His illustrations for The Hobbit add an extra dimension to that remarkable book, and have long influenced how readers imagine Bilbo Baggins and his world. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, the complete artwork created by the author for his story has been collected in The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Including related pictures, more than one hundred sketches, drawings, paintings, maps, and plans are presented here, preliminary and alternate versions and experimental designs as well as finished art. Some of these images are now published for the first time, and others for the first time in colour. Fresh digital scans from the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford and Marquette University in Wisconsin allow Tolkien's Hobbit pictures to be seen more vividly than ever before. The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien has been written and edited by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, two of the leading experts on Tolkien and authors of the acclaimed J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator, The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion, and The J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide.

Islam - Karen Armstrong - Non-christian Religions

Category: Books
Description: In the public mind, Islam is a religion of extremes: it is the world's fastest growing faith; more than three-quarters of the world's refugees are Islamic; it has produced government by authoritarian monarchies in Saudi Arabia and ultra-republicans in Iran. Whether we are reading about civil war in Algeria or Afghanistan, the struggle for the soul of Turkey, or political turmoil in Pakistan or Malaysia, the Islamic context permeates all these situations. Karen Armstrong's elegant and concise book traces how Islam grew from the other religions of the book, Judaism and Christianity; introduces us to the character of Muhammed; and demonstrates that for much of its history, the religion has been a force for enlightenment that promoted liberties for women and allowed the arts and sciences to flourish. Islam shows how this progressive legacy is today often set aside as the faith struggles to come to terms with the economic and political weakness of most of its believers and with the forces of modernity itself.

Jean Craighead George, author of 100 books for young people including 'My Side of the Mountain', dies aged 92
Distinguished childrenand#146;s book author and noted naturalist Jean Craighead George died on May 15. She was 92.

Best known for the Newbery-winning novel Julie of the Wolves (Harper, 1972) and the Newbery Honor title My Side of the Mountain (Dutton, 1959), George penned more than 100 books for young people during a career that began with the publication of Vulpes the Red Fox in 1948.

Popular authors increase output, some doubling to two books a year, to meet insatiable ebook demand
Pity the poor authors in the days of the ebook. Whereas popular authors such as Lisa Scottoline used to produce one book a year, now they are writing two; while others such as Lee Child are churning out short stories in between novels in an attempt to satisfy their fans' demands for more output, lest the fans get bored waiting for the next work and go off and find a new favorite. Meanwhile, James Patterson is producing a dozen or more books each year, about half of which are co-written.

All this at the same time as the internet has changed readers' expectations that they'll be able to hear personally from their favorite authors via blogs, Twitter and Facebook updates.

Would reclusive authors such as J.D. Salinger and Harper Lee be able to gain traction in today's market? Many publishers say no - that what once would have created an aura of intrigue around an author, is not a viable option in the age of interconnectivity.

Pushing back against 'Showrooming', Target will no longer stock Kindles
Target plans to stop selling Amazon Kindle e-readers and tablets, and has already removed the products from its website.

"This is evidence that Target is getting more serious about Amazon as an enemy rather than a partner," said analyst Matt Nemer of Wells Fargo. "That's probably something Target now regrets. It put them behind in the world of multi-channel retail and let a serious competitor learn a lot about their business."

The New York Times reported that as retailers like Target address the challenge of "showrooming," carrying Amazon's Kindle is, as Michael Norris of Simba Information put it, "like Starbucks selling Dunkin' Donuts gift certificates."

Showrooming is the term used to describe a shopper who visits a store to check out a product but then purchases the product online from a different retailer - booksellers report that they often see customers buying online while still standing in their store holding the book they are purchasing elsewhere!

Tor publisher announces all ebooks will be DRM free by July - enabling books to be transferred between devices
Tom Doherty Associates - comprising the Tor, Forge, Orb, Starscape, and Tor Teen imprints - has announced that their entire list of ebooks will be available DRM-free "by early July." In a separate, following notice, Tor UK said that it will do the same. Digital rights management (DRM) is the term used to describe any technology that limits the use of digital content on devices after sale.

President and publisher Tom Doherty writes: "Our authors and readers have been asking for this for a long time. They're a technically sophisticated bunch, and DRM is a constant annoyance to them. It prevents them from using legitimately-purchased e-books in perfectly legal ways, like moving them from one kind of e-reader to another." The company says that as part of the move, they "expect to begin selling titles through retailers that sell only DRM-free books."

Forsaking DRM, and/or experimenting with "lighter" DRM schemes that allow more customer freedom, has been under discussion at a number of houses recently, intensified in the wake of the agency pricing lawsuits and settlements. Tor/Forge are the first "Big Six" imprints to make this move, though Pottermore's recent release of DRM-free Harry Potter ebooks (watermarked in some versions; still encrypted if purchased for the Kindle or Nook platforms) remains the most prominent. The Tor move raises the likelihood that other big publishers will head in the same direction, and also increases the chance that they may do so by division or imprint rather than companywide.

'Three Cups of Tea' author, Greg Mortenson, and publisher seek dismissal of class action suit
At a federal court hearing this week, author Greg Mortenson and his publisher sought dismissal of a lawsuit that "aims to obtain class-action relief for book-buyers allegedly defrauded by purported fabrications" in Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools.

According to the NY Times, the class-action case "is potentially crucial for book publishers, the defendants argue, because if it succeeds - which is by no means certain - it could mean that publishers would be liable to defend lawsuits and reimburse readers every time a memoir turned out to have an inflated recollection of events."

Attorneys for Penguin Group, which published Three Cups of Tea in 2006, contended that "if a publisher were required to guarantee or ensure the truth and accuracy of everything an author says, the costs of publishing books would be prohibitive."

Apple wants to go to trial to defend itself against price-fixing allegations
Apple wants to go to trial to defend itself against U.S. government allegations of colluding with publishers to fix e-book prices, Apple lawyer Daniel Floyd told U.S. District Judge Denise Cote yesterday. Reuters reported that publishers Macmillan and Penguin "took a similar stance in the first hearing in Manhattan federal court since the anti-trust division of the Department of Justice last week accused Apple and five publishers of colluding to break up Amazon.com's low-cost dominance of the digital book market."
