Say It With Poison - Ann Granger - Crime and Thriller

Category: Books
Description: When Meredith Mitchell agreed to stay with her actress cousin Eve in the run-up to Eve's daughter's wedding she anticipated a degree of drama. But she hardly expected it to include murder, blackmail and unrequited love - or it to involve middle-aged divorcee Chief Inspector Markby. After witnessing the only case of murder Westerfield has ever seen, Meredith also finds herself confessing to the bride-to-be, who is clearly not telling the truth about her involvement with the dead man. Despite her considerable diplomatic skills, Meredith is stuck between her duty to the police and family loyalty - especially as her personal enquiries into the Cotswolds town are starting to stir up both old and new affections. Ann Granger's Say It With Poison is a crime novel with a real heart.

Poirot In The Orient - Agatha Christie - Crime and Thriller

Category: Books
Description: Three-in-one omnibus of Murder in Mesopotamia, Death on the Nile and Appointment with Death, plus an exclusive preface by Agatha Christie on the character of Poirot. There is nothing exotic about murder, no matter where it takes place. Away from home, Hercule Poirot finds that he cannot escape death, even when travelling across Mesopotamia, the Nile and Petra. MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA At the Hassanieh dig deep in the Iraqi desert, the wife of a celebrated archaeologist is suffering from terrifying hallucinations. Apparent madness -- until a murderer strikes. DEATH ON THE NILE The tranquillity of a Nile cruise is shattered by the discovery that a young girl has been shot through the head. Stylish and beautiful, she had everything -- even enemies. APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH And among the towering red cliffs of Petra sits the corpse of Mrs Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist is the only sign of the fatal injection that killed her. Based on Agatha Christie's own experiences in the 1930s travelling with her husband, archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan, this trilogy of bestselling novels represents crime fiction at its very best. Here at last they are collected together in a single volume for Christmas.

The staff at Stoley's Boatyard were used to holidaymakers returning their pleasure cruisers a little late after a week or so exploring the network of waterways around Norchester. They were not used to finding their yachts burned almost beyond recognition with the charred remains of a client still aboard. Taking on the murder investigation, Chief Inspector George Gently faces an enquiry like no other he has ever handled. Somewhere beneath the lies of the victim's wife, somewhere obscured by the brittle edge of her daughter's fear, somewhere hidden by her son's hysteria, lies the truth. Description: Akiko Sugiyama, an art fraud investigator based in Tokyo, responds to an urgent request from an old friend and soon arrives at Thaddeus Hall, Exton University in England. When one of the college fellows is found dead in his room the following afternoon, she becomes aware of the tensions that have been generated within the fellowship by recent government efforts to curb 'curiosity-driven' research and replace it with 'useful' research that is deemed to be of measurable benefit to the nation's economy and society. Whilst Akiko plays no direct role in solving the mystery of this death, her observations about it attract the attention of James Baxter, the Detective Chief Inspector assigned to the case. They work together, using Akiko's lateral thinking, to solve the mystery of a second death, which occurs just days later. A part-time employee of Thaddeus Hall who also does secretarial work for a dozen Exton dons careens off her bicycle into the River Thames. The paramedics who attempt to revive her suspect poisoning and they are proven right. But who would have poisoned her, and why? The mystery unfolds further...A sharply-written and occasionally witty novel, Damaged Goods provides an accurate representation of British university life whilst giving an insight into the ill-judged, clumsily implemented initiatives by government that threaten the viability of higher education. Author Ann is inspired by her favourite crime fiction authors: Rex Stout, Dorothy Sayers and P.D. James.

The Garden Of Evening Mists - Tan Twan Eng - General and Literary Fiction

Category: Books
Description: It's Malaya, 1949. After studying law at Cambrige and time spent helping to prosecute Japanese war criminals, Yun Ling Teoh, herself the scarred lone survivor of a brutal Japanese wartime camp, seeks solace among the jungle fringed plantations of Northern Malaya where she grew up as a child. There she discovers Yugiri, the only Japanese garden in Malaya, and its owner and creator, the enigmatic Aritomo, exiled former gardener of the Emperor of Japan. Despite her hatred of the Japanese, Yun Ling seeks to engage Aritomo to create a garden in Kuala Lumpur, in memory of her sister who died in the camp. Aritomo refuses, but agrees to accept Yun Ling as his apprentice 'until the monsoon comes'. Then she can design a garden for herself. As the months pass, Yun Ling finds herself intimately drawn to her sensei and his art while, outside the garden, the threat of murder and kidnapping from the guerrillas of the jungle hinterland increases with each passing day. But the Garden of Evening Mists is also a place of mystery. Who is Aritomo and how did he come to leave Japan? Why is it that Yun Ling's friend and host Magnus Praetorius, seems to almost immune from the depredations of the Communists? What is the legend of 'Yamashita's Gold' and does it have any basis in fact? And is the real story of how Yun Ling managed to survive the war perhaps the darkest secret of all?

The Drop - Michael Connelly - Crime and Thriller

Category: Books
Description: Harry Bosch is facing the end of the line. He's been put on the DROP - Deferred Retirement Option Plan - and given three years before his retirement is enforced. Seeing the end of the mission coming, he's anxious for cases. He doesn't have to wait long. First a cold case gets a DNA hit for a rape and murder which points the finger at a 29-year-old convicted rapist who was only eight at the time of the murder. Then a city councilman's son is found dead - fallen or pushed from a hotel window - and he insists on Bosch taking the case despite the two men's history of enmity. The cases seem to be unrelated; one leads to the discovery of a killer operating in the city for as many as three decades, the other to a deep political conspiracy that reached back into the dark history of the police department...

Popular authors increase output, some doubling to two books a year, to meet insatiable ebook demand
Pity the poor authors in the days of the ebook. Whereas popular authors such as Lisa Scottoline used to produce one book a year, now they are writing two; while others such as Lee Child are churning out short stories in between novels in an attempt to satisfy their fans' demands for more output, lest the fans get bored waiting for the next work and go off and find a new favorite. Meanwhile, James Patterson is producing a dozen or more books each year, about half of which are co-written.

All this at the same time as the internet has changed readers' expectations that they'll be able to hear personally from their favorite authors via blogs, Twitter and Facebook updates.

Would reclusive authors such as J.D. Salinger and Harper Lee be able to gain traction in today's market? Many publishers say no - that what once would have created an aura of intrigue around an author, is not a viable option in the age of interconnectivity.

Pushing back against 'Showrooming', Target will no longer stock Kindles
Target plans to stop selling Amazon Kindle e-readers and tablets, and has already removed the products from its website.

"This is evidence that Target is getting more serious about Amazon as an enemy rather than a partner," said analyst Matt Nemer of Wells Fargo. "That's probably something Target now regrets. It put them behind in the world of multi-channel retail and let a serious competitor learn a lot about their business."

The New York Times reported that as retailers like Target address the challenge of "showrooming," carrying Amazon's Kindle is, as Michael Norris of Simba Information put it, "like Starbucks selling Dunkin' Donuts gift certificates."

Showrooming is the term used to describe a shopper who visits a store to check out a product but then purchases the product online from a different retailer - booksellers report that they often see customers buying online while still standing in their store holding the book they are purchasing elsewhere!

Tor publisher announces all ebooks will be DRM free by July - enabling books to be transferred between devices
Tom Doherty Associates - comprising the Tor, Forge, Orb, Starscape, and Tor Teen imprints - has announced that their entire list of ebooks will be available DRM-free "by early July." In a separate, following notice, Tor UK said that it will do the same. Digital rights management (DRM) is the term used to describe any technology that limits the use of digital content on devices after sale.

President and publisher Tom Doherty writes: "Our authors and readers have been asking for this for a long time. They're a technically sophisticated bunch, and DRM is a constant annoyance to them. It prevents them from using legitimately-purchased e-books in perfectly legal ways, like moving them from one kind of e-reader to another." The company says that as part of the move, they "expect to begin selling titles through retailers that sell only DRM-free books."

Forsaking DRM, and/or experimenting with "lighter" DRM schemes that allow more customer freedom, has been under discussion at a number of houses recently, intensified in the wake of the agency pricing lawsuits and settlements. Tor/Forge are the first "Big Six" imprints to make this move, though Pottermore's recent release of DRM-free Harry Potter ebooks (watermarked in some versions; still encrypted if purchased for the Kindle or Nook platforms) remains the most prominent. The Tor move raises the likelihood that other big publishers will head in the same direction, and also increases the chance that they may do so by division or imprint rather than companywide.

'Three Cups of Tea' author, Greg Mortenson, and publisher seek dismissal of class action suit
At a federal court hearing this week, author Greg Mortenson and his publisher sought dismissal of a lawsuit that "aims to obtain class-action relief for book-buyers allegedly defrauded by purported fabrications" in Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools.

According to the NY Times, the class-action case "is potentially crucial for book publishers, the defendants argue, because if it succeeds - which is by no means certain - it could mean that publishers would be liable to defend lawsuits and reimburse readers every time a memoir turned out to have an inflated recollection of events."

Attorneys for Penguin Group, which published Three Cups of Tea in 2006, contended that "if a publisher were required to guarantee or ensure the truth and accuracy of everything an author says, the costs of publishing books would be prohibitive."

Apple wants to go to trial to defend itself against price-fixing allegations
Apple wants to go to trial to defend itself against U.S. government allegations of colluding with publishers to fix e-book prices, Apple lawyer Daniel Floyd told U.S. District Judge Denise Cote yesterday. Reuters reported that publishers Macmillan and Penguin "took a similar stance in the first hearing in Manhattan federal court since the anti-trust division of the Department of Justice last week accused Apple and five publishers of colluding to break up Amazon.com's low-cost dominance of the digital book market."
