This review is from: Space A Children's Encyclopedia (Dk Reference) (Hardcover)
This is a great introduction to space and astronomy for children. It is visually very attractive with many stunning images but its real strength is how well thought out and good its content is scientifically. I had wrongly assumed that the DK series was the kind of eye candy you see piled up in bargain book stores with shallow poor content but this is not true in this case. The author Peter Bond is apparently a space journalist and fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and British Interplanetary Society and this expertise certainly shows. The book has really broad and up to date coverage of many topics including the big bang, our place in the universe, the life cycle of stars, black holes, the earth moon and solar system. The other theme is humans and space from early ideas, telescopes, famous discoveries and space missions and a section on how to start star gazing yourself. Content comes in well defined blocks of 2 to 4 pages with a mixture of great pictures and short paragraphs...

Bought this book for my 9 year old daughter and she loves it. If your child has any interest in space then they should get a lot out of it.

I bought this as a present for an 8 year old nephew. The combination of good quality illustrations and the right amount of supporting explanation means that he has really enjoyed reading it. Recommended.
