The Art Of Science - Richard Hamblyn - Popular Science

Category: Books
Description: Science. Does the word fill you with excitement, or dread, or something in between? Science and the art of science writing can, and should, be something to get excited about. The extracts featured in this anthology span centuries and continents, but are connected by their authors' desire to understand, explain and enrich the world. The Art of Science is not a book about great scientific theories, complicated equations or grand old men and women in their laboratories; instead, it's about the places we draw our inspiration from; about daily routines and sudden flashes of insight; about dedication, and sometimes desperation; and the small moments, questions, quests, clashes, doubts and delights that ultimately make us human. From Galileo to Lewis Carroll, from Humphry Davy to Charles Darwin, from Marie Curie to Stephen Jay Gould, from rust to snowflakes, from the first use of the word 'scientist' to the first computer, from why the sea is salty to Newtonian physics 'for the ladies', The Art of Science is a book about people, which is to say it's a book about passion, politics, and poetry. Above all, though, it's a book about the good that science, and scientific thinking, can and does do.

Philosophy Of Science - Samir Okasha - Popular Science

Category: Books
Description: What is science? Is there a real difference between science and myth? Is science objective? Can science explain everything? This Very Short Introduction provides a concise overview of the main themes of contemporary philosophy of science. Beginning with a short history of science to set the scene, Samir Okasha goes on to investigate the nature of scientific reasoning, scientific explanation, revolutions in science, and theories such as realism and anti-realism. He also looks at philosophical issues in particular sciences, including the problem of classification in biology, and the nature of space and time in physics. The final chapter touches on the conflicts between science and religion, and explores whether science is ultimately a good thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Space opera the way it's meant to be written, 13 Oct 2011
This review is from: Sliding Void (Book 1 of the Sliding Void science fiction series) (Kindle Edition)
Sliding Void is a great novel in the style of a space opera - think Iain Banks with the M or Alastair Reynolds, although this book is enthused with more of a pulp spirit (early Star Wars before it grew bad) that really gets you under the skins of the characters, especially Calder the space barbarian and Lana, the captain of the ship - the Gravity Rose - which all the adventures revolve around. I can see this series running and running!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but..., 17 Feb 2012

Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sliding Void (Book 1 of the Sliding Void science fiction series) (Kindle Edition)
Although I appreciate that this is the first in a series and it is well crafted, interesting and a good read it is very very short. OK so thats why the star is off there is nothing technically wrong with this book, I enjoyed reading it, I might even purchase the next one (especially if its longer) in fact the only thing missing from this is the rest of it. If you are looking for a new Sci-Fi read then this is good, and i do recommend it but its a short story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deeply engaging science fiction adventure, 16 Oct 2011
This review is from: Sliding Void (Book 1 of the Sliding Void science fiction series) (Kindle Edition)
Stephen Hunt is a writer best known for writing fantasy books, but with this work, he proves he also has what it takes to produce an utterly original and sometimes bizarre and strange SF world as well. It scans a little like Neil Gaiman doing Neal Stephenson doing a noir episode of Firefly. Very clever, and you're immediately transported into a believable far future where the only thing that remains the same is humanity's appetite for self-destruction, politics and BS. It is vivid, quirky, sometimes deranged, but always clever.

Looking forward to the next book in this - promised as continuing - series now.
