Anarchy Evolution - Greg Graffin - Religion: Comparative General and Reference

Category: Books
Description: Most people know Greg Graffin as the lead singer of the punk band Bad Religion, but few know that he also received a Ph.D. from Cornell University and teaches evolution at the University of California at Los Angeles. In Anarchy Evolution, Graffin argues that art and science have a deep connection. As an adolescent growing up when drugs, sex, and trouble could be had on any given night, Graffin discovered that the study of evolution provided a framework through which he could make sense of the world. In this provocative and personal book, he describes his own coming of age as an artist and the formation of his naturalist worldview on questions involving God, science, and human existence. While the battle between religion and science is often displayed in the starkest of terms, Anarchy Evolution provides fresh and nuanced insights into the long-standing debate about atheism and the human condition. It is a book for anyone who has ever wondered if God really exists.

Virolution - Frank Ryan - Popular Science

Category: Books
Description: The extraordinary role of viruses in evolution and how this is revolutionising biology and medicine. Darwin's theory of evolution is still the greatest breakthrough in biological science. His explanation of the role of natural selection in driving the evolution of life on earth depended on steady variation of living things over time -- but he was unable to explain how this variation occurred. In the 150 years since publication of the Origin of Species, we have discovered three main sources for this variation -- mutation, hybridisation and epigenetics. Then on Sunday, 12th February, 2001 the evidence for perhaps the most extraordinary cause of variation was simultaneously released by two organisations -- the code for the entire human genome. Not only was the human genome unbelievably simple (it is only ten times more complicated than a bacteria), but embedded in the code were large fragments that were derived from viruses -- fragments that were vital to evolution of all organisms and the evidence for a fourth and vital source of variation -- viruses. Virolution is the product of Dr Frank Ryan's decade of research at the frontiers of this new science -- now called viral symbiosis -- and the amazing revolution that it has had in these few years. As scientists begin to look for evidence of viral involvement in more and more processes, they have discovered that they are vital in nearly every case. And with this understanding comes the possibility of manipulating the role of the viruses to help fight a huge range of diseases.

Spontaneous Evolution - Bruce Lipton - Mind Body and Spirit: General

Category: Books
Description: We've all heard stories of people who've experienced seemingly miraculous recoveries from illness, but can the same thing happen for our world? According to pioneering biologist Bruce H. Lipton, it's not only possible, it's already occurring. In Spontaneous Evolution, this world-renowned expert in the emerging science of epigenetics reveals how our changing understanding of biology will help us navigate this turbulent period in our planet's history and how each of us can participate in this global shift. In collaboration with political philosopher Steve Bhaerman, Dr. Lipton invites readers to reconsider: the 'unquestionable' pillars of biology, including random evolution, survival of the fittest, and the role of DNA; the relationship between mind and matter; how our beliefs about nature and human nature shape our politics, culture, and individual lives; and, how each of us can become planetary 'stem cells' supporting the health and growth of our world. By questioning the old beliefs that got us to where we are today and keep us stuck in the status quo, we can trigger the spontaneous evolution of our species that will usher in a brighter future.

Magnify The Evolution Of Bruno Littlemore - Benjamin Hale - General and Literary Fiction

The Evolution Of Bruno Littlemore - Benjamin Hale - General and Literary Fiction

Category: Books
Description: Bruno Littlemore; linguist, artist, philosopher. A life defined by a soaring mind, yet bound by a restrictive body. Born in down-town Chicago, Bruno's precocity pulls him from an unremarkable childhood, and under the tuition of Lydia, his intellect dazzles a watching world. But when falls in love with his mentor, the world turns on them with outrage: Bruno is striving to be something he is not, and denying everything that he is. For despite his all too human complexities, dreams and frailties, Bruno's hairy body, flattened nose and jutting brow are, undeniably, the features of a chimpanzee. Like its protagonist, this novel is big, abrasive, witty, perverse, earnest and accomplished. The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore goes beyond satire by showing us not what it means, but what it feels like be human - to love and lose, learn, aspire, grasp, and, in the end, to fail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, 19 Dec 2011
This review is from: Evolution The Human Story (Hardcover)
I absolutely love this book!
It is so beautiful.

There's a lot of pictures and paintings, printed on big pages, most of them full size (little larger than A4 paper size). Exceptionally good reconstructions of our ancestors, even paintings of their organization in the landscape. Very good descriptions to accompany the pictures and paintings. Easy to read.

Everyone with just a little interest in how we evolved should buy this book. Even children would love to look at the pictures and it is so easy to read that older children can read it alone.

With a background in biology and a special interest in human evolution, I still find this book special. It is the perfect book to supply all the academic textbooks that is lacking what this book has - pictures and paintings! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 6 Oct 2011

This review is from: Evolution The Human Story (Hardcover)
A comparatively quick journey through the evidence for human evolution with some amazing reconstructions of earlier humam forms that have been discovered. There is much to consider and learn in this book but it's as good and clear a read on the subject I have read which anyone with reasonable intelligence will appreciate. The book helps to fill in many of the missing links in human evolution with evidence based in reality few will be able to argue with though I am sure some will refuse to accept due to religious convictions.

For those lucky people living in the real world 'Evolution The Human Story' is a gem. Thanks to Alice Roberts and all the contributors for a fascinating book. I find evolution an illuminating science and the more I study it the greater my feeling of satisfaction that it really is the explanation for the development of life on our planet and this book adds to that feeling and understanding.

This book sets out a very difficult story in a clear, logical manner. It uses modern graphic techniques to illustrate very complex details in a concise and punchy way. I wanted to read it all before putting it down. I have worked in science for many years and still learned from this book but I also had no hesitation in arranging for another copy to be gift wrapped and sent to my granchildrens address. They love it. I recomend it unconditionally.Evolution The Human Story

Trending: Hardbacks vs e-books: the sequel

In the world of journalism it's called a "reverse ferret" - a story breathlessly announcing that Black is White, just 24 hours after confidently asserting that Black is Black. In the genteel environs of publishing, it's a volte-face. Whatever it is, James Daunt, owner of Daunt Books and managing director of the Waterstones chain, executed a classic twirl at the weekend.

The curious world of Norton Juster

Some people are very easy to interview. Norton Juster is not one of them. He's delightful and articulate, but listening to the recording of our time together, it's striking how much more interesting his answers are than my questions. So our conversation entirely failed to resolve classics such as "Where did the idea for your book come from?" and ended up instead about vocational education, bipolar disorder, obscure Edwardian ghost-story writers, C P Snow, synaesthesia and the walks Juster used to take with his older brother. In some respects, it's hardly surprising; Juster has been giving interviews about his children's classic The Phantom Tollbooth for half a century, so might be forgiven for wanting his conversations to roam elsewhere.

How Aharon Appelfeld chronicled the Holocaust

Blooms of Darkness, in Green's graceful, grave and irresistibly readable English version, tells the story of Hugo, a young Jewish boy in an occupied town in eastern Europe who loses his parents to the camps but stays alive thanks to the shelter and salvation offered him by a local prostitute, Mariana. It extends and deepens one of the most remarkable journeys in all modern literature. In a prolific career whose highlights include novels such as Badenheim 1939, Tzili, The Immortal Bartfuss and The Iron Tracks, as well as the memoir The Story of a Life, Appelfeld has interrogated the meaning of what happened to him, to his community, and to humanity itself, during Europe's era of genocide.

Gwendoline Riley: A portrait of the artist as a brooding young woman...

Gwendoline Riley was finishing her first novel at the age that most of us were sleeping in, bunking off, or congregating around a pint at the student union bar. Turning her university dissertation into her debut, Cold Water (2002) she signed a two-book deal at the age of 22. Since then, she has accumulated a hipster-ish following and several literary awards (Somerset Maugham Award, the Betty Trask Award, a John Llewellyn-Rhys Memorial prize shortlisted nomination).
