5.0 out of 5 stars lovely childrens bed time story book, 2 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Having travelled to my sisters house and forgot to take any bed time reading books for my 5 year old I found this osborne childrens bible on a book shelf in her house. Emma thoroughly enjoyed the stories because they were so well writen with children in mind. The stories are easy to understand and have nice pictures on each page, also each chapter follows on from the previous one, they have some basic reference to the people in the previous stories (this was done in an easy enough way for Emma to point this out). I offered to buy Emma a new book the next day while we were in town but she asked if we could read some more from the bible book.
I think this book would make a lovely christening/birthday present for a small child.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, 18 Feb 2009
By
My daughter (3 1/2 years old) was fascinated by the story of Jesus at Christmas and kept asking questions about him, and also about 'Jesus the man'

She attends a C of E pre-school and so gets some exposure to this, whilst at home there is no religion at all.

This gave us a dilemma - we didn't want to discourage her interest but had little knowledge of our own to draw on.

This book has proved extremely useful. It isn't really a bible, but is a collection of stories FROM the bible, both old and new testaments, framed in terms that are much easier for a child to understand, and each story short enough to keep the attention.

It doesn't stop the questions of course ('why were the Romans so mean?') but it does allow us to support her interest in Jesus without having to feel like we are giving her religious instruction.

I have on negative - not enough pictures. Whilst some pages are well illustrated, some have no pictures at all. At 3... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars straightforward and clear, 6 Feb 2011
This review is from: Children's Bible (Usborne Childrens Bible) (Hardcover)
My 6 year old told me that she wanted me to buy her a book about God - the bible! I looked through the various ones on offer and settled for this one. It is in simple language and despite other reviews saying not enough pictures, the ones it does have are lovely. She really enjoys me reading this to her and in fact was able to read the creation chapter all by herself (she is quite a good reader though). She made me read 3 chapters last night because she was interested in the way that the people in the previous chapters related to the next generation. It is a good introduction to children and although we are not a religious family, the fact that she wanted to know for herself encouraged me to get this. She is truly interested and the straightforward way in which it is written helps her to understand what she wants to know at her level. It may lead to her wanting to read the full story for herself I hope! A good purchase which I would recommend as an introduction to the bible... Read more

Trending: Hardbacks vs e-books: the sequel

In the world of journalism it's called a "reverse ferret" - a story breathlessly announcing that Black is White, just 24 hours after confidently asserting that Black is Black. In the genteel environs of publishing, it's a volte-face. Whatever it is, James Daunt, owner of Daunt Books and managing director of the Waterstones chain, executed a classic twirl at the weekend.

The curious world of Norton Juster

Some people are very easy to interview. Norton Juster is not one of them. He's delightful and articulate, but listening to the recording of our time together, it's striking how much more interesting his answers are than my questions. So our conversation entirely failed to resolve classics such as "Where did the idea for your book come from?" and ended up instead about vocational education, bipolar disorder, obscure Edwardian ghost-story writers, C P Snow, synaesthesia and the walks Juster used to take with his older brother. In some respects, it's hardly surprising; Juster has been giving interviews about his children's classic The Phantom Tollbooth for half a century, so might be forgiven for wanting his conversations to roam elsewhere.

How Aharon Appelfeld chronicled the Holocaust

Blooms of Darkness, in Green's graceful, grave and irresistibly readable English version, tells the story of Hugo, a young Jewish boy in an occupied town in eastern Europe who loses his parents to the camps but stays alive thanks to the shelter and salvation offered him by a local prostitute, Mariana. It extends and deepens one of the most remarkable journeys in all modern literature. In a prolific career whose highlights include novels such as Badenheim 1939, Tzili, The Immortal Bartfuss and The Iron Tracks, as well as the memoir The Story of a Life, Appelfeld has interrogated the meaning of what happened to him, to his community, and to humanity itself, during Europe's era of genocide.

Gwendoline Riley: A portrait of the artist as a brooding young woman...

Gwendoline Riley was finishing her first novel at the age that most of us were sleeping in, bunking off, or congregating around a pint at the student union bar. Turning her university dissertation into her debut, Cold Water (2002) she signed a two-book deal at the age of 22. Since then, she has accumulated a hipster-ish following and several literary awards (Somerset Maugham Award, the Betty Trask Award, a John Llewellyn-Rhys Memorial prize shortlisted nomination).
