Storm Of Steel - Ernst Junger - Biography: Historical Political and Military

Category: Books
Description: 'As though walking through a deep dream, I saw steel helmets approaching through the craters. They seemed to sprout from the fire-harrowed soil like some iron harvest'. Storm of Steel is one of the greatest works to emerge from the catastrophe of the First World War. A memoir of astonishing power, savagery and ashen lyricism, it illuminates like no other book the horrors but also the fascination of total war, presenting the conflict through the eyes of an ordinary German soldier. As an account of the terrors of the Western Front and of the sickening allure that made men keep fighting on for four long years, Storm of Steel has no equal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping Story, 5 May 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
I loved this book! Diane Chamberlain writes so fluidly that I just found myself going with the flow of the book and reading it at every possible opportunity.

The story is about Laurel, a woman who drank when she was pregnant with her now 15 year old son, Andy. As a result he has Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, which has affected his growth and development. Laurel has always put all her energy into looking after Andy, giving the majority of her love and attention to him, rather than his older sister Maggie, who has always been able to look after herself. However, when a fire breaks out at the church where Andy is attending a lock-in with friends, after initially being the hero who got the other kids out, the suspicion of arson points to him. Laurel has to try to protect Andy, but realises that she also needs to protect Maggie too.

This book is a fabulous read. Diane Chamberlain is always likened to Jodi Picoult and I can see the similarities, but I find... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Jodi Picoult, 16 May 2010

Mrs. C. Colbert (Blackburn, Lancashire, UK) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
Diane Chamberlain has been called the Southern Jodi Picoult and certainly there are similarities, for instance each chapter is narrated by a different character, and family relationships are explored in depth. However, while I have read and didn't particular warm to Jodi Picoult's books, I have to say that this story really captivated me.

The first chapter was narrated by Andy which I thought was inspiring as straight away we got a feel for his character and how he thinks and feels about his family and his circumstances. I instantly warmed to him as he joined all his 'friends' in the church for the evening and tried to talk to a girl he was attracted to by telling her that he loved her. The boy she was with talked down to Andy and he was confused as he thought everyone was his friend. Then the fire starts and panic sets in inside the church.

As the story continues we see through Andy and his family's eyes the police investigation into the arson attack and family... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Page-turner!, 7 May 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
Beginning with the suspected arson of a local church during a teenagers lock-in, "Before the Storm," intertwines events before, during and after the event from multiple perspectives including suspect Andy (the 15 year old boy with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome), his mother Laurel, sister Maggie and uncle Marcus. I found all of the main characters to be well rounded and likeable the strands of the narrative flowed well between all of them. I also enjoyed the setting of Topsail island as Chamberlain's description really came to life. There are many twists and turns alogd the way, as more and more background to each character is revealed and I found myself wanting to keep reading to find out what would happen next.

"Before The Storm," is the first novel I have read from Diane Chamberlain but it certainly won't be the last. I highly recommended this to fans of Jodi Picoult.

Under 10% of self-published authors earn a living from their writing
Self-published writers who have an agent, or who use the DIY route to get a traditional deal, earn much more than the average self-published writer, according to a survey of more than 1,000 self-published writers (72% USA, 9% UK). But less than 10% make enough to live off their earnings.

Despite the relatively low earnings, the survey found that there had been an and#147;explosionand#148; in the number of titles being self-published; 53% of the respondents self-published for the first time in 2011, with 20% making their dand#233;but in 2010.

Popular authors increase output, some doubling to two books a year, to meet insatiable ebook demand
Pity the poor authors in the days of the ebook. Whereas popular authors such as Lisa Scottoline used to produce one book a year, now they are writing two; while others such as Lee Child are churning out short stories in between novels in an attempt to satisfy their fans' demands for more output, lest the fans get bored waiting for the next work and go off and find a new favorite. Meanwhile, James Patterson is producing a dozen or more books each year, about half of which are co-written.

All this at the same time as the internet has changed readers' expectations that they'll be able to hear personally from their favorite authors via blogs, Twitter and Facebook updates.

Would reclusive authors such as J.D. Salinger and Harper Lee be able to gain traction in today's market? Many publishers say no - that what once would have created an aura of intrigue around an author, is not a viable option in the age of interconnectivity.
