Him and Me

Him and Me

Category: Books
Description: Him & Me is a hugely entertaining and irreverent account of a unique relationship between a father and son. Written in two distinctive styles, it reflects the larger-than-life personalities of its authors, Jack and Michael Whitehall. ' This book is a portrait of the pretty odd relationship I have with my elderly father. It's given me an opportunity to share memories of him losing his temper with foreigners on holidays, being rude to my mother's family at Christmas and failing epically during the fathers' race at my prep school. He's also written some stories about me, but can I just say, before you read anything, that I recall being a calm, well-behaved and learned child, not the intellectually subnormal, mal-coordinated dipshit that he paints me as. Nor am I, as he suggests inside, a sex addict, a flasher or a Scientologist.' Jack ' How dare Jack refer to me as elderly! People always tell me how young I look for my age. In this book, I have at last been able to recount the many occasions when I have been let down by my only son. He failed on the stage, the sports field and he even screwed up the interview for his first boarding school by pretending he had mental health issues. Despite being practically illiterate, he tells stories about me, strewn with grammatical errors and peppered with endless exaggerations and lies. I was a kind, doting father, who guided his son through his formative years with love, care and respect.' Michael ' I'm not your only son, what about Barnaby?' ' Oh yes, I forgot about Barnaby.' Packed with anecdotes, some embarrassing and indiscreet, many warm and touching, Him & Me is lavishly illustrated with family photographs and Jack's original illustrations. Friends, relatives, neighbours, teachers, actors, none are safe once Jack and Michael have opened up the Whitehall archives and shared their hilarious memories with us. Praise for Him & Me: ' The rapport between them is palpable and priceless . . . crackles with their back-and-forth dynamic... an embarrassment of biographical riches' Daily Telegraph ' Disgracefully funny and rather touching' R4 Midweek Jack Whitehall is a comedian, actor and television presenter. Following his first solo show at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he has subsequently won numerous comedy awards, most recently King of Comedy, voted for by the public at both the 2012 and 2013 British Comedy Awards. A regular guest on panel shows, including Have I Got News For You and A League of Their Own, he is currently starring in two hit TV series: Bad Education for the BBC, which he also wrote, and the award-winning Channel 4 series Fresh Meat in which he plays JP. Jack's new national arena tour Jack Whitehall Gets Around played to sell-out audiences across the country and will be available on DVD this Autumn. Michael Whitehall as a theatrical agent has been involved in the careers of many eminent actors, including Colin Firth, Richard Griffiths, Angela Thorne, Michael Fassbender, Daniel Day Lewis, Nigel Havers and Judi Dench. He is also a television and theatre producer. His memoir Shark Infested Waters was published in 2007 and is currently being developed for television. He appeared with Jack at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Backchat, which was subsequently commissioned by BBC TV as a six-part series and screened in the Autumn of 2013. A second series is due for transmission in the Summer of 2014. He recently fulfilled his lifelong ambition of appearing in Dictionary Corner on Countdown.

Magnify African Religions: A Very Short Introduction
African Religions: A Very Short Introduction

African Religions: A Very Short Introduction

Category: Books
Description: Africa is home to hundreds of ethnic groups, who together speak more than a thousand languages. It is not surprising, then, that Africa's enormous range of peoples, cultures, and ways of life has engendered a wide diversity of religious practices. This Very Short Introduction offers a wide-ranging look at the myriad indigenous religious traditions on the African continent. Drawing on archeological research, historical evidence, ethnographic studies, and archival materials such as missionary records, Jacob Olupona-one of the world's leading authorities on African religions-captures a wealth of information in a short compass. The book not only gives the reader a full and vivid sense of African religious belief-exploring myths, gods and local deities, ancestor worship, rites of passage, festivals, divination, and much more-but it also underscores the role these religions play in everyday African life. Indeed, traditional religions inform everything from birthing and death, marriage and family dynamics, to diet, dress and grooming, health care, and even governance. Monarchs, chiefs, and elders play both political and religious roles, imparting secular and spiritual guidance to their subjects, while also being guardians of religious centres such as shrines, temples, and sacred forests. The author also examines the spread of Christianity and Islam throughout Africa, both the moderate sects (which often blend aspects of indigenous faith into their own practice) and the more extreme fundamentalist sects, which the author states have had a dire effect on African life. In fact, radical forms of Christianity and Islam-both of which decry tradition religion as paganism-have driven a near total collapse of indigenous practice. But if traditional religions are engaged in a battle for their lives in Africa, Olupona shows that they are thriving elsewhere in the world-particularly in the Americas and in Europe. About the Series: Oxford's Very Short Introductions series offers concise and original introductions to a wide range of subjects-from Islam to Sociology, Politics to Classics, Literary Theory to History, and Archaeology to the Bible. Not simply a textbook of definitions, each volume in this series provides trenchant and provocative-yet always balanced and complete-discussions of the central issues in a given discipline or field. Every Very Short Introduction gives a readable evolution of the subject in question, demonstrating how the subject has developed and how it has influenced society. Eventually, the series will encompass every major academic discipline, offering all students an accessible and abundant reference library. Whatever the area of study that one deems important or appealing, whatever the topic that fascinates the general reader, the Very Short Introductions series has a handy and affordable guide that will likely prove indispensable. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

A clear, reader-friendly writing style makes it easy to understand both basic science and clinical applications, putting the material into the context of everyday dental practice. The Lives Of Jack London 2018

Category: Books
Description: The many lives of the American literary legend whose works include the classic Call of the Wild. I would rather be a superb meteor, and that each of my atoms shines with a magnificent brilliance, rather than a sleeping planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I will not waste my life trying to prolong my life. I want to burn all my time. - Jack London. Jack London (1876-1916), the author of such classics as Call of the Wild, White Fang and Martin Eden, was the last great voice of the American frontier and a master of the adventure novel. The Lives of Jack London was published first in France as Les vies de Jack London to coincide with the release of the film documentary of the same name in 2016, the centenary of his death. This book's title is apt, for London's adventures and achievements far exceeded his short life. Shared here are stories of a life of magnificent brilliance - riding the rails, pirating oysters, shovelling coal and joining the Gold Rush, sailing the world, immersing himself in island societies, joyous family life, a lifelong 1,000 words a day habit and ultimately tragedy. This engrossing and beautifully illustrated account features 400 period photographs, press clippings and letters, the majority of them never before published: The Golden Gate 1876-1893 Childhood and youth in the San Francisco Bay Area; oyster pirating; seal hunting expeditions in the Bering Strait; The Savage Face of Capitalism 1893-1897 Works at a cannery factory, cross-country protest march with unemployed workers; life as a hobo; participates in Socialist activism; resolves to educate himself; The Call of the Great North 1897-1902 Prospecting for gold in Alaska and the Yukon; returns home to write; first publication of his short stories; Celebrity 1902-1904 Newfound social status; marriage and birth of two daughters; newspaper journalist; The People of the Abyss and The Call of the Wild are published; purchases the Spray; War Correspondent 1904 Reporting in Korea during the Russo- Japanese War; The Valley of the Moon 1904-1906 Divorce, and second marriage; family life; writes White Fang, continues political activism; San Francisco Earthquake 1906-1907 Makes plans to sail around the world; eyewitness report of the earthquake; The Snark, Pacific Travels 1907-1908 San Francisco, Hawaii, the Marquesas Islands, Tahiti and Samoa; The Snark, Conflict in the Black Islands 1908 to 1909 Melanesia ( Fiji, New Hebrides, Solomon Islands). Conflict in the region, illness forces his return home; Return to California 1909-1911 Becomes a landowner; granddaughter dies; purchases the Roamer sailboat; builds Wolf House; moves to Glen Eden cottage; Close Calls 1911-1913 Personal disasters and heartbreaks, wife's miscarriage, loses Wolf House to fire, begins drinking heavily; Jack London Films 1913-1914 Works in Hollywood on film adaptations of his works; Vera Cruz 1914-1916 Reporting for William Randolph Hearst on the American military intervention in Mexico; articles supporting Washington, conflict with Socialist Party; Between Glen Eden and Hawaii 1914 to 1916 Heavy financial losses; health deteriorates; convalesces in Hawaii; discovers psychoanalysis and Jung; death at Glen Eden. Jack London lived his meteoric life during a time of tumultuous change in North America. The Lives of Jack London is an engrossing and beautifully illustrated retelling of the vibrant and ultimately tragic life of one of America's greatest writers.

This fully revised 3rd edition includes: PART 1 - Practical information * How to prepare for a long-distance trip* What to look for in a new bike with reviews of some of the world's best touring- and trekking-bikes* Adapting a standard bike for the Big Ride* Choosing components, equipment for the road and reviews of camping gear* Health precautions, inoculations, visas, money and safety PART 2 - Worldwide route outlines Across Europe, Asia, Australasia, North and South America and Africa; recommended routes within countries and overland. Everything from popular routes eg India's Leh- Manali Highway to lesser-known cycle-touring areas such as Mongolia. PART 3 - Tales from the Saddle Ten first-hand accounts of spoke-bending biking adventures worldwide. Introduction Why are so many people going bike touring these days? A minority pastime during the heyday of the car, cycling has once again become a popular choice for travellingespecially for long overseas trips. The first cycle-touring craze began in the 1870s. Then, as now, the bicycle offered a revolutionary way of touring: you go exactly where you want, when you want, and all under your own steam. This was before the age of the car and walking or riding a horse were the only other options until the bicycle. In 1885 the Rover Safety Bicycle came along, and for all the innovation since then, most modern touring bicycles would be recognizable to a Victorian, as would their derailleur gears. Bike touring is undergoing a boom at the moment but it is really one of many periodic rediscoveries. Bicycle design, components and gear are evolving to suit the changing needs and tastes of people. It's a combination of experimentation and using tried and tested designs, such as the 'diamond' frame of the Rover Safety Bicycle. The Adventure Cycle- Touring Handbook is all about looking at what people are choosing and using: what kind of bikes, what gear and what destinations are being chosen by today's bike tourers. There are many reasons for taking a bike on your next long trip. My own guess as to why bike touring is back in fashion is that many travellers get burned out by backpacking, which really amounts to travelling by bus and train for most of the time. Buses are certainly fast but they go from one noisy town to another, leaving little possibility of exploring the spaces in between, the places where the bus doesn't stop. Others use bikes to go even further off the beaten track: they want to go where buses don't go at all and perhaps where other vehicles cannot get to either. Paul Woloshansky built his own racks to carry extra gear after being told all too often: ' There's a prettier way to go but there's nothing out there at all.' Other adventurers, such as Sweden's Janne Corax (see p122), have said the same thing: there were times when there was no other way of getting to where they wanted to go. You couldn't get there on foot and you couldn't get there in a truck. It was possible only on a bicycle. Half the adventure, though, is in the riding itself. Being out in the fresh air and seeing much more than is possible from a bus or train window is always a good feeling, whether you are wandering around France or riding across India. A lot of today's cycle tourists are interested in the riding but not that interested in bikes. It's a means of transport and a way to carry bags comfortably, while sitting down and enjoying the view. Not everyone is drawn to the high passes of the Andes or the Himalaya but they are all enjoying that same sense of freedom and all that comes with itunexpected discoveries, off-route detours or an impromptu day off when you find a great place to stay. Trips like these are not as arduous as some expeditions but they are every bit as satisfyingand they are still adventures, for they allow for spontaneity. And if you are carrying a tent and camping gear, you're prepared for just about any eventuality because you've always got a place to spend the night. This book looks at the possibilities out there, the different styles of travelling and the basic gear and know-how that you need. We also look at some of the more exciting cycling destinations around the world, complete with suggestions as to which routes to take and what you need to plan a trip in that region. The Adventure Cycle- Touring Handbook does not set out to tell you exactly where to go: it's your adventure, after all. But it's good to have a general idea of a destination and what you're likely to find when you're there and this is what this book aims to do. In the final part of this book we include stories from all around the world, not just about the biking but also about the adventures cyclists had on their journeys. It's the old idea that a bike ride isn't just about the riding but also about the places you were able to get to and the people you got to meetand all because you decided to travel by bicycle.

The Making Of The President 2016

The Making Of The President 2016

Category: Books
Description: From Roger Stone, a New York Times bestselling author, longtime political adviser and friend to Donald Trump, and consummate Republican strategist, comes an in-depth examination of how Trump's campaign tapped into the national mood to deliver a stunning victory that few saw coming. In the early hours of November 9, 2016, one of the most contentious, polarizing, and vicious presidential races came to an abrupt and unexpected end when heavily favored presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton called Donald J. Trump to concede, shocking a nation that had, only hours before, given little credence to his chances. Donald Trump pulled the greatest upset in American political history despite a torrent of invective and dismissal of the mainstream media. Here is the first definitive explanation about how the silent majority shifted the election to Donald Trump in reliable Democratic Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, thus handing him the presidency. Stone, a long time Trump retainer and confidant, gives us the inside story of how Donald Trump almost single-handedly harnessed discontent among Forgotten Americans despite running a guerrilla-style grass roots campaign to compete with the smooth running and free-spending Clinton political machine. From the start, Trump's campaign was unlike any seen on the national stage-combative, maverick, and fearless. Trump's nomination was the hostile takeover of the Republican party and a resounding repudiation of the failed leadership of both parties whose policies have brought America to the brink of financial collapse as well as endangering our national security. Here Stone outlines how Donald Trump skillfully ran as the anti- Open Borders candidate as well as a supporter of American sovereignty, and how he used the Globalist trade deals like NAFTA to win over three of ten Bernie Sanders supporters. The veteran adviser to Nixon, Reagan, and Trump charts the rise of the alt-conservative media and the end of the mainstream media monopoly on voter impacting information dissemination. This is an insider's view that includes studying opposition research into Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton's crimes, and the struggle by the Republican establishment to stop Trump and how they underestimated him. Stone chronicles Trump's triumph in three debates where he skillfully lowered expectation levels but skewered Mrs. Clinton for the corruption of the Clinton Foundation, her mishandling of government email, and her incompetence as Secretary of State. Stone gives us the inside word on Julian Assange, Wikileaks, Clinton campaign chief John Podesta, Huma Abedin, Anthony Weiner, Carlos Danger, Doug Band, Jeffery Epstein, and the efforts to hide the former first lady's infirmities and health problems. Stone dissects the phony narrative that Trump was in cahoots with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin or that the e-mails released by Wikileaks came from the Russians. The grizzled political veteran of ten Republican presidential campaigns from Richard Nixon to Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump explains how Trump's election has averted near certain war with Russia over Syria and the rejection of the neocon policies of the Obama/ Clinton Administration. The Making of the President 2016 reveals how Trump brilliantly picked at Hillary Clinton's weaknesses, particularly her reputation as a crooked insider, and ignited the passions of out-of-work white men and women from the rust belt and beyond, at a time when millions of Americans desperately wanted change. Stone also reveals how and why the mainstream media got it wrong, including how the polls were loaded and completely misunderstood who would vote. Stone's analysis is akin to Theodore H. White's seminal book The Making of the President 1960. It is both a sweeping analysis of the trends that elected Trump as well as the war stories of a hard-bitten political survivor who Donald Trump called one tough cookie. Other books by Roger Stone: The Man Who Killed Kennedy, a New York Times bestseller in which Roger Stone makes a compelling case that Lyndon Baines Johnson was the mastermind behind the murder of President John F. Kennedy. Stone maps out LBJ's motives for orchestrating the murder and uses fingerprint evidence and testimony to prove JFK was shot by a long-time LBJ hit man-not Lee Harvey Oswald. Nixon's Secrets gives the inside scoop on Nixon's rise and fall in Watergate. Stone charts Nixon's rise from election to Congress in 1946 to the White House in 1968 after his razor-thin loss to John Kennedy in 1960, his disastrous campaign for Governor of California in 1962 and the greatest comeback in American Presidential history. Jeb and the Bush Crime Family, in which Stone collaborates with Saint John Hunt to make this a no-holds-barred history of the Bush family. After detailing the vast litany of Jeb's misdeeds, Stone travels back to Samuel, Prescott, George H. W., and George W. Bush to weave an epic story of privilege, greed, corruption, drug profiteering, assassination, and lies. This exposition will have you asking, Why aren't these people in prison? The Clintons' War on Women, where Roger Stone and historian Robert Morrow uncover the explosive and ugly truths about Bill and Hillary's crimes and cover-ups. They reveal the details about their actions in Arkansas, Bill Clinton's scandalous time in the White House, who really ordered the deadly attack on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Hillary's federally-investigated tenure as secretary of state, their time at the corrupt Clinton Foundation, and Hillary's failed campaign for president.
