    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Winner of the 2010 Boardman Tasker Prize. Ron Fawcett is a natural-born climber. In 1969, while still at school in his native Yorkshire, he tied into a climbing rope for the first time and was instantly hooked. From that moment on, it seemed nothing else in his life mattered nearly as much as his next vertical fix. Ten years later, Fawcett was the most famous rock climber in Britain and among the best in the world, part of a new wave whose dedication to training transformed the sport, pushing standards further and faster than ever before - or since. His legacy of new climbs ranks him alongside the very best in the history of the sport. He was also the first to style himself a professional rock climber, starring in the landmark television documentary Rock Athlete, and appearing on the covers of magazines around the world. But far from enjoying the fame, Fawcett found the pressures of the limelight too much to bear, and at the end of the 1980s he faded from view. Now, for the first time, he tells his extraordinary story, of how his love of nature and the outdoors developed into a passion for climbing that took him to the top - and almost consumed him. This title won the 2010 Boardman Tasker Prize and was shortlisted for the 2010 Banff Mountain Book Competition. It comes from the publisher of Jerry Moffatt - Revelations, winner of the Grand Prize at the 2009 Banff Mountain Book Festival. It is written by the leading journalist Ed Douglas. British rock climbing's folk hero Ron Fawcett tells his story for the first time. Waterstones Ron Fawcett - Rock Athlete - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Description: Cross Sports Book Awards Cricket Book of the Year Winner of the MCC/Cricket Society’s Book of the Year Award 2017. My father and I mowed a narrow strip of grass just beyond the brow of a small tier that hid the white lines we had painted with emulsion as batting and bowling creases. Then I rolled the strip with the barrel of the lawnmower until it appeared flat enough for play. I was nine years old and the game of bat and ball had stolen my heart. Mark Nicholas, the face of Channel 5's Cricket on Five and anchor for Channel 9's Test commentary team in Australia, has a unique knowledge and perspective on the world of cricket. Description: Jan Ullrich: The Best There Never Was is the first biography of Jan Ullrich, arguably the most naturally talented cyclist of his generation, and also one of the most controversial champions of the Tour de France. In 1997, Jan Ullrich announced himself to the world by obliterating his rivals in the first mountain stage of the Tour de France. So awesome was his display that it sent shockwaves throughout the world of cycling and invited headlines such as L' Equipe's 'The New Giant'. He went on to become Germany's first ever Tour winner, storming to victory in that edition by almost ten minutes, a result that was greeted as an era-defining changing of the guard. Everyone agreed: Jan Ullrich was the future of cycling. He was soon also voted Germany's most popular sportsperson of all time, and his rivalry with Lance Armstrong defined the most controversial years of the Tour de France. Ullrich was a German national treasure credited with popularizing cycling in his home country. And yet - for all the acres of coverage he received throughout his career, and the interest in Ullrich as the only person who had seemed capable of knocking Armstrong off his perch - the boy from East Germany remained an enigma. Now, Daniel Friebe - who has covered 21 editions of the Tour de France - has gone in search of the man who was said in 1997 would go on to dominate his sport for a generation, but never quite managed it. Just what did happen to the best who never was? This is a gripping account of how unbearable expectation, mental and physical fragility, the effects of a complicated childhood, a morally corrupt sport and one individual - Lance Armstrong - can conspire to reroute destiny. Daniel Friebe takes us from the legacy of East Germany's drugs programme to the pinnacle of pro cycling and asks: what price can you give sporting immortality?.

  • Waterstones Carps: The Rugby World Cup's Father

    Price: £16.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: John Kendall-Carpenter was a truly extraordinary man. He captained the England rugby team in the early 1950s, when he was widely regarded as one of the cleverest and most tactically astute players in the world. At the same time he launched out on a career in education which saw him not only hold the headmastership of three well-known public schools but also play a prominent role in the Headmasters' Conference in its negotiations with the Labour Government in the 1970s to ensure the continued independence of that sector. In addition, the first Rugby World Cup simply would never have happened without him. President of the Rugby Union in 1980, he was then elected as England's representative on the International Rugby Board where his role was to defend the amateur code which was coming under increasing pressure from professionalism. His conversion to the cause of international rugby and the commercial potential of the Word Cup, with his subsequent passion and energy, was instrumental in getting the first World Cup in 1987 off the ground and also paved the way towards the professional game. He then threw himself into the planning of the next World Cup but sadly died just a year before it started in 1991. John Kendall-Carpenter was remarkable man with many friends - and a few enemies! - not only in sport, but in education, the theatre, among politicians and writers. He is still a legend in Cornwall - his adopted home. This biography will appeal to every dedicated rugby supporter as well as those interested in sport in general and how rugby emerged from the fields of English public schools to the huge commercial sporting event it is today. Description: Born at the end of the 19th century, Donald Healey was a Cornishman from Perranporth who made a major impact on motoring, motor sport and the motor industry. In the 1920s and 1930s he became a national hero for his successes in motor rallies, taking numerous prizes in European rallies and even winning the Monte Carlo rally in 1932 in a 41/2 Litre Invicta. In that same decade he was lured to Triumph, for whom he designed a successful and nicely styled new range of models as well as the wonderful but ill-fated 8-cylinder supercharged Dolomite. After the Second World War he brought his lifetime ambition to fruition by launching the Healey motor car, starting with the Westland Tourer and the Elliot Saloon, which were the fastest road cars of their time, followed by the Tickford saloon and the stark Silverstone roadster. But he didn't stop there: his next coup was the Healey 100, a prototype of which the boss of Austin saw on the Healey stand at Earls Court and immediately pounced on, making a deal with Healey that would result in the Austin-Healey 100, manufactured and sold by Austin. The rest is history, with the immortal 100 developed into the 100/6 and the 3000, and alongside them the perky Austin-Healey Sprite. This book is a comprehensive history of the life and work of Donald Healey, in business, in dealings with customers and colleagues, as a competitor in motor sport, and as a car designer and manufacturer, written by an American devotee of British sports cars whose indefatigable research has turned up many new stories and countless previously unseen photographs, all with the collaboration of the Healey family.

  • Waterstones The Maurice Burton Way

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Maurice has lived a hell of a life. The world needs to hear about it' Ned Boulting' This book is an inspiration to those who want to achieve in both sport and life' Phil Liggett MBE Maurice Burton rose above racism in British society and sport to triumph over adversity. This is the long-awaited, authorised biography of a ground-breaking British cyclist. On a still summer's evening at Leicester's Saffron Lane Velodrome in June 1974, Maurice Burton defeated an elite field to become Britain's first ever Black cycling champion. For his father, it was a moment of intense pride; Rennal arrived in 1948 from Jamaica and made his home in South London. As his 18-year-old son climbed onto the podium, boos rang out around the stadium. The crowd's response that day was typical of the racism and exclusion experienced by Burton. After being overlooked for Olympic selection despite beating those selected, he moved to Belgium to race professionally on the 'six-day' circuit across the continent, becoming the first Black six-day rider for over 75 years. This authorised biography traces Maurice's experiences as the child of a Windrush-generation father and an English mother growing up in London, before moving across to Europe and his eventual return to South London in 1984, where he became a successful business owner and community leader. It rightly places Maurice Burton at the forefront of the British sporting narrative as a pioneer in our collective cultural history.
