Review: I’ve been a Katie Fforde fan for years, after discovering one of her early books in a charity shop and falling madly in love with it. I love her sensible, middle class characters and the slightly off-putting, pragmatic speech; it really couldn’t be any other writer, it’s so distinctive. I love the unique worlds she creates, the detail she puts into every inch, where her characters control their own destinies. They make you want to run off and become an antique dealer, or a painter, or live on a houseboat. And they’re always formulaic, in a good, comforting way. I usually avoid short stories so I was a little apprehensive, but I bought these on faith because I just love her novels so much. And I wasn’t disappointed. They’re wonderful, heart-warming, light reading that will definitely surprise you and make you smile. And what’s a rarity in the world of short stories, each and every one feels absolutely complete in and of themselves. There’s no sense that they should be longer, or that they were rushed or cut short to fit a word count. Every single one is perfectly formed and crafted. And they’re packed full of Christmas cheer. Perfect for getting in the spirit this time of year. I loved them!

Review: I really enjoyed the first couple but after a while it felt quite formulaic.
