Description: New Directions is pleased to announce the relaunch of the long-celebrated bilingual edition of Rimbaud's A Season In Hell & The Drunken Boat | ?? a personal poem of damnation as well as a plea to be released from 'the examination of his own depths." Rimbaud originally distributed A Season In Hell to friends as a self-published booklet, and soon afterward, at the age of nineteen, quit poetry altogether. New Directions's edition was among the first to be published in the U.S., and it quickly became a classic. Rimbaud's famous poem 'The Drunken Boat" was subsequently added to the first paperbook printing. Allen Ginsberg proclaimed Arthur Rimbaud as 'the first punk" | ?? a visionary mentor to the Beats for both his recklessness and his fiery poetry. This new edition proudly dons the original Alvin Lustig-designed cover, and a introduction by another famous rebel | ?? and now National Book Award-winner | ?? Patti Smith. Review: Beautiful item, with the original cover art same as first edition, a beautifully written preface by Patti Smith, and of course the wonderful poetry of the great teenage French poet Rimbaud. This original translation from French to English is probably the most accurate. It is not the easiest poetry to understand but is very addictive and it draws you in. Any translation from French to English is always going to be approximate but this translation is superb. Rimbaud is hugely influential and once you become aware of his existence his name comes up so often that you wonder why didn't you know of his work before. He is unknown to the general public and a poet superstar to those in the know. I highly recommend this edition.

Review: This was the second translation of his work I read after discovering it in 93' that struck me as something very special and unique to the literary world. Rimbaud actually had "A Season In Hell" and "The Drunkened Boat" published himself before leaving behind literature. Louise Varese's translation is revised from her earlier translation. This is even better than when I first read it years ago. Patti Smith adds her keen observation of her take on him as an human being and a poet. I recommend this as a great document of his work.
