Review: This is a meticulously researched and interesting book. Well written and thought provoking. Of particular interest is the chapter on the ideology of Christmas within the British Empire during that period. My one quibble is that the title of the book is a little misleading. This is not an inclusive history of the Christmas festival through the ages. The book concentrates on the Victorian, Edwardian and 20th century periods (largely up to around 1950). The author discusses attitudes to the perceptions of 'Christmas past' held in those era's mentioned above but doesn't detail what the actual festivities were in 17th, 16th centuries or the medieval period. It you are looking to read up on the practices and social impact of an English Christmas since the mid 19th century this is a valuable resourse but be aware that it doesn't cover earlier periods.
