Review: Yes, my title contains a Wilde-quote. I should start off by saying how much as an adult and history-enthusiast I like these Usborne Young Reader books ; they are generally well-written and give a very good summary of the key elements within a narrative. The books are accessible for children and are a helpful rehearsal for most grown-ups. So me and my 8-year-old daughter, who has an interest in history as well, quite enjoy these books during reading practice. The Famous Lives series makes an attempt to be reasonably-balanced with respect to character choice - not all relate to Western European history and most do not glorify historical despots. Christopher Columbus, is nevertheless a somewhat controversial figure, but the book mostly deals with his 1492 voyage across the Atlantic. A trip into the unknown, so it reads like an exiting boys-adventure. But I still found some good entries to start a discussion with my daughter; what did change in Europe after Columbus his discovery?, what happened to Spain?, was the church pleased?, where the Indians happy and how did their circumstances change? ect. ect. As such, not a bad topic for guided-reading. Despite my annoying broader questions she at least enjoyed the story quite a bit.
