Review: Excellent read. Some parts have clearly aged where it comes to language on race and women but this expansive look at the currents of 1970s cinema is phenomenal. Every single director covered is given detail and exposed not just for their PR-crafted genius but for their routinely unacceptable behaviour, their callowness, their capriciousness, their narcissism, their insecurities. You're left with a cast of characters who changed the world of film (often for the worse) in fits and bursts, usually imploding along the way. A must-read for anyone interested in cinema. The biggest a-hole in the bunch? Probably Dennis Hopper.

Review: There is plenty of good stuff in this book but a hell of a lot of clutter to get through to get to it. I really enjoyed getting inside films that I grew up with in the 70s but, for me reading this book as a fan of the films not the background machinations, far too much of the book covered endless squabbles between various players in the industry. This was ok at the start but got tedious as, basically, the same story was repeated throughout the book with different characters, depending on the film being made, fighting (and f*****g) among themselves. If you're into Holywood and like the backstory as much as what goes on the big screen, you could well love this book. Just not for me.

Description: AN ECONOMIST BOOK OF THE YEAR From The Sopranos to streaming: the scandalous behind-the-screens story of the TV revolution by the author of the cult film classic Easy Riders, Raging Bulls. The revolution has been televized. From The Sopranos to Stranger Things, the shows we watch - and the ways we watch them - have been transformed over the past fifty years. Out of the bland wasteland of 'play-it-safe' broadcasting came astonishing stories of sex, violence, and corruption shown first on cable, and then by way of streaming. Today, the power of viewers to select what they want and when they want it is greater than ever before. In short, we are living in a new golden age of television, but golden ages don't last forever. Revolutions have a habit of eating their own, and the era of 'peak TV' may have an unhappy ending. Pandora's Box is a major new account of the small screen from cultural critic Peter Biskind. Through exclusive, candid and colourful interviews with writers, showrunners, directors and actors, Biskind brings us face to face with the people whose creations we encounter every day on our sofas, and reveals the dynamic interplay of art, commerce and technology. We follow executives down the corridors of power and see how their money and guile cultivate, then crush creativity; we witness the making - and unmaking - of T Vs biggest hits. There has never been a more exciting time in entertainment history, and Peter Biskind, the ideal insider guide, captures it all. Description: Alan Bates, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Tom Courtenay, Albert Finney, Richard Harris, Peter O' Toole, Robert Shaw and Terence Stamp: They are the most formidable acting generation ever to tread the boards or stare into a camera, whose anti-establishment attitude changed the cultural landscape of Britain. This was a new breed, many culled from the working class industrial towns of Britain, and nothing like them has been seen before or since. Their raw earthy brilliance brought realism to a whole range of groundbreaking theatre from John Osborne's Look Back in Anger to Joan Littlewood and Harold Pinter and the creation of the National Theatre. And they ripped apart the staid, middle-class British film industry with kitchen-sink classics like Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, This Sporting Life, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, A Kind of Loving and Billy Liar before turning their sights on international stardom: Connery with James Bond, O' Toole as Lawrence of Arabia, Finney with Tom Jones and Caine in Zulu. Don't Let the Bastards Grind You Down brings alive the trail-blazing period of theatre and film from 1956-1964 through the vibrant energy and exploits of this revolutionary generation of stars who bulldozed over austerity Britain and paved the way for the swinging 60s. What Peter Biskind's Easy Riders Raging Bulls did for American cinema writing so Don't Let the Bastards will do for the British cinema.

  • Waterstones African Elephant, Male

    Price: £8.49

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Elephant bulls are considerably bigger than elephant cows. Reaching heights of almost four metres, they are the second largest land animals after giraffes. They also weigh five to six tonnes, which makes them the heaviest of all land animals. African elephant bulls usually leave their herd when they are about twelve years old. By then they are grown-up enough to find their own food and defend themselves, so they move through the country with other bulls or as a loner – in search of another herd. Elephants recognise their own reflection. They are among the very few animals able to do this. Not suitable for children under the age of 3 years due to small parts which could cause a choking hazard. Waterstones African Elephant, Male - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
