Review: I enjoyed N.M Gwynne's book on English Grammar as (disgracefully) I did not learn proper English Grammar at my Private School. I did not learn it properly until I embarked on a course to teach English as a second language many years later. His English Grammar book is a handy little primer. I don't like this book though. I did take Latin for a few years at school but was baffled by the rote learning approach with no proper explanation of the grammatical terms and the way they are used. My Latin teacher was an awful man who drilled into you endless verb conjugations and heaven help you if you did not remember them. This book advocates this old fashioned approach and tries to cram a lot of information and teaching into a relatively small space. Therefore the learning curve is very steep and those who are new to learning Latin could easily be intimidated by this. My book of choice is "Latin Demystified" by the late American Classical scholar Dr Richard Prior ( who died far too young recently in his early 40s). It is published by McGraw Hill and offers a chapter on introducing the Latin Language and the differences in grammatical function between English in a thorough yet clear manner before moving on to dealing with each tense and the declensions in turn while providing a lot of vocabulary and practice to help what you have learned sink in. I have a great love for ancient history and classical literature (in translation) and have always regretted the fact that the bad experiences I had at school had put me off the language for years. This book advocates that same high pressure, dry approach and therefore I was unable to persevere with it.
