Review: I love this book. I had never read either of these books so this was a good chance to do so. I am part way through Iliad and I am really enjoying it. The quality of the book itself is really good. The pages are not too thin and the cover looks great. The first thing I done when I took it out of the box it came in was go straight on Amazon and look at what other books they have. I plan on getting more so that my book shelf looks nice and sophisticated.

Review: The book itself is bound well, and good quality pages, and the price is excellent. Getting both works of Homer in one book is also pretty convenient. However, there are two major let downs for me (and a star off for each), these being: - each page uses 2 columns for the layout, which makes it harder to read than it needs to be, and (the big one); - for some weird reason, the translator decided to use the Roman god names...sometimes, rather than the Greek ones. This might have made sense if it was set or written later, but this was written around 200 years before the Roman empire even got started. Even more troublesome is they don't do this consistently, and in some places refer to the gods by their Greek names - pretty unhelpful! Personally, I'd look for a different translation, but at the price this will be hard to beat.

Description: Gillian Cross's brilliant retellings and Neil Packer's clever illustrations bring to life Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, two of the greatest stories ever told. When first published Walker's versions of the Iliad and the Odyssey attracted attention both for the quality of the writing and for their amazingly stylish artwork. Multi-award-winning author Gillian Cross makes two of the greatest stories in the world come alive for children in her strong, clear, deceptively simple retellings, which are faithful to the spirit and structure of Homer's epic poems, and this new bind-up in a friendly format comes complete with an introduction and a generous selection of Neil Packer's fabulous illustrations in black and white.

Description: Homer's two epics of the ancient world, The Iliad and The Odyssey, tell stories as riveting today as when they were written between the eighth and ninth century B.C. This edition employs Samuel Butler's classic translations of both texts. The Iliad, which tells of the siege of Troy by the Greeks, is an unforgettable tale of nations at war and of the courage and compassion heroic soldiers show upon the field of battle. The Odyssey is the story of the Greek hero Odysseus and the many marvels and challenges he encounters during his ten-year voyage home to Ithaca after the end of the Trojan War. . Description: Homer's Iliad and Odyssey were central to the educational system of Byzantium, yet the religion and culture of the Homeric epics | ??even the ancient Greek language itself | ??had become almost unrecognizable to Byzantine Greek readers coming to the texts nearly two millennia later. The scholar, poet, and teacher John Tzetzes (ca. 1110-1180) joined the extensive tradition of interpreting Homer by producing his Allegories of the Iliad, dedicated to the foreign-born empress Eirene. Tzetzes later composed the Allegories of the Odyssey, a more advanced verse commentary, to explain Odysseus's journey and the pagan gods and marvels he encountered. Through historical allegory, the gods become ancient kings deified by the pagan poet; through astrological interpretation, they become planets whose positions and movements affect human life; through moral allegory Athena represents wisdom, Aphrodite desire. This edition presents the first translation of the Allegories of the Odyssey into any language.

Description: The twenty-fourth book of the Iliad - the account of Priam's ransoming of Hector's body from Achilles - is one of the masterpieces of world literature, a work of interest to a far wider audience than scholars of ancient Greek. In this edition Colin Macleod tries to reach both scholars and Greekless readers alike. In his commentary he gives help to readers unfamiliar with the language of Homer and discusses problems of content and expression, never treating this book in isolation but drawing attention to Homer's artistry and thought in the context of the whole of the Iliad. In his introduction Mr Macleod examines Homer's notion of poetry, his style and language and the architecture and meaning of his work. He tries to show why Book XXIV is a proper conclusion to the Iliad. This is an edition for classical scholars, undergraduates and students in the upper forms of schools. The introduction and substantial parts of the commentary require no knowledge of Greek and should find readers among all who are interested in European literature.
