Review: Learn how Julie and the Phantoms bring their passion for music to life in this novelisation of the hit Netflix show from Kenny Ortega! When Julie is kicked out of her schools music programme she doesn’t know what to do. Getting back into music after the loss of her mother is all she want. So she fights for her place and makes a comeback with her new band. There’s just one catch her bandmates are ghosts. In 1995, Luke, Reggie and Alex were about to play the Orpheum with their band, Sunset Curve. However, shortly before the show could start their dreams and their lives are brought to an end by some dodgy street dogs. Now with Julie as their lead singer they have a second chance to make it big. But a powerful ghost named Caleb Covington has his own plans for the band and places his stamp (curse) on them. Can they break his curse of this be the end for Julie and the Phantoms. I read this after watching the series (which I loved) and wow it did not disappoint. By reading it after I’d watched the series meant I could picture the scenes in my head (all though this meant I spotted minor changes). I definitely felt all the emotions reading this book. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It was a rollercoaster ride. While it was only a short read at 158 pages it did well to capture most the series. Although there were a couple of great scenes/songs that were missed out that I would have loved to have seen included but I do understand that it’s not possible to include everything. For me I read this one sitting (around 2 hours) I just loved it so much and didn’t want it to end. I enjoyed how the author used different character point of views to tell the story. Loved the book. Love the series. Love the soundtrack. What more can I say. The cast/characters have made things better for me in these different times.

Review: The fact that it took me 12 days to read this, a book that I should have got through in 1-2 days because I put it down for a week says a lot. I love the show and have watched it repeatedly. Despite this book being aimed at the show’s target audience of pre/early teens, I was quite excited, especially for the extra content. There wasn’t any, not really. A few speeches were different, but there was nothing new. The cutting of some of the iconic scenes such as the chemistry scene, Perfect Harmony, and Edge of Great (to name but a few) was so disappointing as I was looking forward to getting a bit more insight to these. The characters in the book felt quite flat and 2 dimensional. Somehow the author managed to make them boring as there’s very little banter between the boys or Julie and Flynn to give them the life they have in the show. I’m also not impressed that I had to pay for it twice as my preordered paperback (ordered 20 December) still hasn’t arrived so I downloaded the kindle version.
