Review: This is a fantastic book for a young football fan, their parents, and really for anyone who enjoys a good pun, visual jokes and a bit of homespun philosophy thrown in. For those familiar with the absolute classic "Happy Families" and "Each Peach Pear Plum" books produced by Allan and his late wife Janet, I can only say that her enormous footsteps in the illustration department are assuredly filled by Sebastien Braun, with great draughtsmanship, composition and humour. As a simple story book it's fantastic, lots for the inquiring mind to investigate, discover and ask questions, Allan Ahlberg's beautifully measured verse tells the story, opens the world up to discovery and even has a stab at explaining the beautiful game, too. Great for reading and exploring with even the youngest football obsessive - IF you can get them to sit down long enough to pay attention! The only thing that could make this book more perfect, would be to read it whilst England are giving Brazil a good spanking in the World Cup Final - but if that's not to be .. the ball turns out to be a metaphor for the circle of life, and there's always a fresh generation coming through to ... well pick up the ball!

Review: Purchased as a gift for a 60-something man who loves the poem... but didn't love the children's book, sadly! Perhaps his mind's-eye images didn't match the illustrations. Nevertheless, a wonderful poem in an attractive book, good for reading aloud to children.
