Review: "Leo the Late Bloomer" was a book both my children read and enjoyed when they were little. My son had difficulty processing visual-spatial information and was clumsy - lots of spills and a few quite nasty accidental injuries. I am pleased to report that he survived childhood, self esteem intact, has an interesting job he loves and is good at and has even achieved obtaining his driving licence at the age of 40. So when my friend Sarah asked me to recommend a book for her son, now aged four, who seems dyspraxic (very clumsy) and is beginning to realise he is different, I had no hesitation in recommending Leo. I was surprised that I remembered that befuddled lion from all from all those years ago when he brought us delight. But Leo is truly unforgettable so he sprang instantly to mind. I bought "Leo the Late Bloomer" as a surprise gift for Sarah and have heard that he is a big hit with a wee boy from a new generation of readers. I highly recommend Leo for all children and especially those with a mild developmental delay. My favourite line, addressed to Leo's anxiously hovering parents is "A watched bloomer never blooms." And in his own good time Leo does in fact bloom. Just like my lovely son.

Review: I was a 'late bloomer', being given this book rather upset me, actually making it clear people thought I wasn't doing things right/well enough/fast enough. I became an engineer, software consultant, movie producer and pilot, so no idiot, but this book still stings old wounds of not being acceptable, good enough etc. That said, the illustrations are glorious. I'd scan them and rewrite the story, make it less judgemental of achievement and just embrace the beauty of the pictures. 5* for the pictures, but -2* for the message

Description: Introducing a bold new voice in Australian nonfiction, Late Bloomer is a heartfelt coming-of-age memoir that will change the way you think about autism. Clem Bastow grew up feeling like she'd missed a key memo on human behaviour. She found the unspoken rules of social engagement confusing, arbitrary and often stressful. Friendships were hard, relationships harder, and the office was a fluorescent-lit nightmare of anxiety. It wasn't until Clem was diagnosed as autistic, at age 36, that things clicked into focus. The obsession with sparkly things and dinosaurs. The encyclopaedic knowledge of popular music. The meltdowns that would come on like a hurricane. The ability to write eloquently while conquering basic maths was like trying to understand ancient Greek. These weren't just 'personality quirks' but autistic traits that shaped Clem's life in powerful ways. With wit and warmth, Clem reflects as an autistic adult on her formative experiences as an undiagnosed young person, from the asphalt playground of St Joseph's Primary School in Melbourne, Australia, to working as an entertainment journalist in Hollywood. Along the way she challenges the broader cultural implications and ideas around autism, especially for women and gender-diverse people. Deconstructing the misconceptions and celebrating the realities of autistic experience, Late Bloomer is as heartbreaking as it is hilarious, and will stay with you long after the reading.

Description: Rich girl, street punk, lost girl and icon. scholar, stripper, victim and media-whore: The late Kathy Acker's legend and writings are wrapped in mythologies, created mostly by Acker herself. In this first, fully authorized biography, Kraus approaches Acker both as a writer, and as a member of the artistic communities from which she emerged. At once forensic and intimate, After Kathy Acker traces the extreme discipline and literary strategies Acker used to develop her work, and the contradictions she longed to embody. Using exhaustive archival research and ongoing conversations with mutual colleagues and friends, Kraus charts Acker's movement through some of the late 20th century's most significant artistic enterprises.

Description: It's 1996, and Chris Kraus is in Berlin, seeking a distributor for her film Gravity & Grace, described alternately as 'an experimental 16mm film about hope, despair, religious feeling and conviction' and 'an amateur intellectual's home video expanded to bulimic lengths'. It's 1942 in Marseille, and Simone Weil is waiting for the US entry visa that will save her from the Holocaust, while writing work described alternately as a 'radical philosophy of sadness' and 'immoral, trite, irrelevant and paradoxical'. It's the late 90s, the millennium is approaching, and Chris Kraus is in Los Angeles, not eating, waiting for her s/m partner to reply to her emails. It's 1943, and Simone Weil is in London, completing her project of transcendence by dying of starvation. Filled with Chris Kraus' trademark wit and frankness, unfolding to reveal the lives of ecstatic visionaries and failed artists, Aliens & Anorexia is an audacious novel about failure, empathy and sadness.
