Review: Jacob loved his grandad. As a small kid he loved to hear the impossible stories he was told. As a bigger kid he stopped believing they were true. As a disillusioned teenager he became worried that his grandad was going to be confined in a home that could manage his increasingly paranoid outbursts. Then something happens and Jacob has to follow the clues his grandad left in order to save his own sanity. Where is this island orphanage where his grandad grew up? What did he mean 'find the bird in the loop'? Throughout this well written story we follow the twists and turns, coincidences that were no such things and stranger than truth realities of the world Jacob finds himself drawn towards. Even better (if possible) is the wonderful way the book is visually put together. Mixing traditional graphic style illustration and photographic images the pages go from black and white to colour and back again, following not just Jacob's story of discovery but tracking his emotions. This could be considered a YA novel. Certainly there's nothing in it I would call 'adult'. I wouldn't let that stop you from reading it though. Inventive, entertaining and a joy to look at. Looks like I've found another series to collect.

Review: I found this book in an Amazon search for "books for children". I wanted a book for a ten year old. I purchased the book but will not give it to the intended recipient for some years. The book is well done but probably better for teen-age youngsters. So my view: NOT for "children".
