Review: I read this book a couple of months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It felt like a very personal book with lots of details about the private life of Jane Fonda. It's a journey through an eventful life and filled with insights of different kinds. Already liked Jane Fonda before reading it, but respected her even more after. Mostly because of the way she shares her mistakes and exposes her flaws so openly. I also liked very much how respectful she is to the people who has been her life and are also in the book. Well done indeed.

Description: Jane Fonda has been in the public eye since birth; just being Henry's daughter qualified her for celebrity status. However, her intelligence and talent compelled her to reach beyond this birthright to become an individual of extraordinary and diverse accomplishments. It would take a restless camera to document Jane Fonda's life for she is a woman of formidable energy, but Fred Lawrence Guiles' expert commentary captures her in motion. We pursue her in a tireless route of study, self-discovery, and social awareness that causes her to ultimately reject the 'Beautiful People" life-style of her first husband, Roger Vadim, for the role of political activist with her present husband, Tom Hayden. We witness how the shift in political climate transforms her from history's scourge to history's darling. Yet despite governmental harassment and public scorn for her radical beliefs, she, nonetheless, achieves international acclaim for her acting and twice received the Academy Award for Best Actress. Candid interviews with friends, relatives, and colleagues enrich this admiring but honest portrait; fifty-three black and white photographs complement an impeccable text vivifying an exceptional woman of many identities. An unmistakable impression remains that Jane Fonda will continue to grow, and the world will continue to watch.

Description: Jane Seymour is the wife of Henry VIII we know the least about, often written off as 'Plain Jane'. Queen of England for just seventeen months, during her life Jane witnessed some of the most extraordinary events ever to take place in English history, later becoming a part of them. Jane ensured her place in Henry's affections by giving him his much longed for male heir only to tragically lose her life twelve days later leaving behind a motherless son and a devastated husband. For the remainder of his life Henry would honour the mother of his only legitimate son and would come to regard Jane as his 'true and loving wife'. But who was Jane Seymour? Throughout this illustrated book we will find a woman who was neither saint or sinner, but a human being with her own beliefs and causes.

  • Waterstones The Austen Girls

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Jane and Cassandra Austen were the closest of sisters from early childhood. Cassandra was the most important person in Jane's life; Jane looked up to and adored her older sister, who was devoted to her in return. As well as sharing the same education, interests, friends and Christian faith, the inseparable sisters supported each other through various emotional crises and family troubles. Most importantly, Cassandra, who was privy to Jane's imaginary world, supported and encouraged her in her writing. The Austen Girls explores the lives of the Austen sisters and traces their relationship throughout Jane's life and literary career, until Jane's premature death at the age of forty-one. It also looks at Cassandra's life after the loss of her sister. 'I Jane Austen of the Parish of Chawton do . give and bequeath to my dearest Sister Cassandra Elizabeth every thing of which I may die possessed, or which may be hereafter due to me. I appoint my said dear Sister the Executrix of this my last Will & Testament.' Jane Austen, 27 April 1817. The bequest included the manuscripts of Jane's unpublished and unfinished novels.

  • Waterstones The Illustrated Letters of Jane Aus

    Price: £17.95

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A beautifully illustrated account of the letters and correspondence of Jane Austen. It has been said that Jane Austen the woman and Jane Austen the author are all of a piece, and nowhere is this more evident to the lovers of her novels than in the pages of her letters. This handsome celebration of Austen's letters is illustrated with portraits, facsimile letters, topographical engravings and fashion plates, all helping to bring to life the world Jane Austen inhabited. The letters, with an accompanying commentary by Penelope Hughes-Hallett, are separated into six periods of Jane Austen's life, between the years 1796, when she was twenty, and 1817, the year of her death. They celebrate Jane Austen's talent for expressing exactly what she perceived, making this an illuminating companion to her novels. Although the book follows a broadly chronological scheme, the letters are arranged round visual themes, including the Hampshire countryside, social life in Bath and London, domestic pursuits, paying visits and travelling by carriage. The author, who was born in Jane Austen's Hampshire village of Steventon, lectured on English Literature for the Open University and the Oxford University Department of External Studies. .
