Description: Dora Thewlis, or 'Baby Suffragette' as she became known by the tabloids, was only sixteen years old when she was arrested at a demonstration outside the Houses of Parliament. The story of the young weaver from Huddersfield who joined Mrs Pankhurst's fight for the vote captured the imagination of the nation. Review: A very personal and moving story of how one young naive girl was caught up in the harsh realities of being a member of the suffragette movement in Huddersfield. The story illustrates just how the fight of the suffragettes was not simply confined to the Pankhursts but involved women throughout Britain. Recommended for anyone interested in the part played by women throughout history.

Description: Before 1893 no woman anywhere in the world had the vote in a national election. A hundred years later almost all countries had enfranchised women, and it was a sign of backwardness not to have done so. This is the story of how this momentous change came about. The first genuinely global history of women and the vote, it takes the story of women in politics from the earliest times to the present day, revealing startling new connections across time and national boundaries - from Europe and North America to Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Muslim world post-9/11. A story of individuals as well as of wider movements, it includes the often dramatic life-stories of women's suffrage pioneers from across the world, painting vivid biographical portraits of everyone from Susan B. Anthony and the Pankhursts to hitherto lesser-known activists in China, Latin America, and Africa. It is also the first major post-feminist history of women's struggle for the vote. Controversially, Jad Adams rejects the widely accepted idea that success was primarily a result of the pressure group politics of the suffragists and their supporters. Ultimately, he argues, it was nationalism, not feminism, that was the most important factor in winning women the vote. Waterstones Women and the Vote - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Vote for Honesty and Get Democracy Done

    Price: £11.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The truth matters. Vital decisions made on our behalf require that the people in government are honest with the electorate. Vote for Honesty and Get Democracy Done seeks solutions to the increasing problem of dishonest behaviour by some UK politicians. It is an action plan to force political change. This book is solution-led, rather than problem-led. The Vote for Honesty Campaign for the next general election is politically neutral. Voters simply have to 'Lend their Vote in 2024' and only vote for a candidate that has signed the Vote for Honesty Contract. This is much stronger than a manifesto pledge as any candidate would have a contractual penalty imposed if elected and then not vote for the Honesty Bill. Positive change is possible. A simple solution to a complex problem. This upbeat and pragmatic book suggests UK politics in the future can be better. Honest politicians will feel the benefit and feel good about their profession. A climate of trust and a deepening of democracy will make our society more efficient and effective, open and productive.

Description: In this urgent wake-up call, Philip Coggan shows how democracy today faces threats that we ignore at our own risk. Amid the turmoil of the financial crisis and high debt levels, it is easy to forget that the ultimate victim could be our democracy itself. Tracing democracy's history and development, Coggan revisits the assumptions on which it is founded. What exactly is democracy? Why should we value it? What are its flaws? And could we do any better? Coggan proposes ideas for change and improvement to the system itself so the next vote we cast will not be the last. Waterstones The Last Vote - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Mollie On The March

    Price: £8.99

Description: Mollie Carberry is a suffragette! Well, sort of. Mollie and her best friend Nora have been bravely fighting for women's rights - even though no one else really knows about it. But when they hear a big protest is being planned, they know they have to take part. If only they didn't have to worry about Nora's terrible cousin, her awful brother and her neighbour's very annoying dog . An engaging story about a strong and intelligent girl fighting for the right for women to vote. WHEN DID IRISH WOMEN GET THE VOTE? The Representation of the People Act 1918 became law on 6 February 1918. It gave the vote to virtually all men over 21, and women over 30 who met certain requirements. In November 1918 an act was passed which enabled women to stand for parliament in the forthcoming elections. The only woman to win a seat in parliament across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in December 1918 was Constance Markievicz, who was elected by the people of south Dublin but who did not take her seat. In 1922, the new Irish Free State gave the vote to all women over 21, finally giving Irish women the same voting rights as Irish men.
