Description: Mystery in the Channel is a classic crime novel with a strikingly modern sub-text. The story begins with a shocking discovery. The captain of the Newhaven to Dieppe steamer spots a small pleasure yacht lying motionless in the water, and on closer inspection, sees a body lying on the deck. When members of his crew go aboard the yacht, they find not one male corpse but two. Both men have been shot, but there is no sign of either the murderer or the pistol. The dead men, it quickly emerges, were called Moxon and Deeping, and they were chairman and vice-chairman respectively of the firm of Moxon General Securities, one of the largest financial houses in the country. Inspector Joseph French of Scotland Yard is called in, reporting directly to the Assistant Commissioner, Sir Mortimer Ellison. French soon discovers that Moxon's is on the brink of collapse. One and a half million pounds have gone missing, and so has one of the partners in the business. Moxon and Deeping seem to have been fleeing the country with their ill-gotten gains, but who killed them, and how? French faces one of the toughest challenges of his career, and in a dramatic climax, risks his life in a desperate attempt to ensure that justice is done.

Review: This novel was written and is set in the 1930s and its background is the collapse of a very large financial company in the city. There are parts of this story which have a contemporary feel for the 21st century reader. Just before the collapse became public its senior management team went missing and two of them are found shot dead in a yacht floating unattended in the English Channel. Inspector French from Scotland Yard soon takes over local police to investigate and a jolly good job he makes of it. French follows up each line of enquiry until it hits the buffers, then moves on to the next line of investigation and just as each trail seems to fade away a new and exciting lead emerges. French is a civilised and thorough investigator and the information which informs his thought process is shared with the reader when he gets it, so there is no sleight of hand when the murderer is eventually unveiled. A very satisfying read. During the course of this investigation French recalls aspects of previous investigations some of which peaked my interest. I had never heard of this author before I bought this book and will certainly try to find some more of his works. I was also prompted to check out some details on the author who was born in Dublin, grew up in a vicarage in Northern Ireland, worked there as a civil engineer for 30 years and was a talented church organist. Not what you might expect as a training ground for a prolific crime writer.

Review: Interesting to re-read this one, hard on the heels of the latest reprints. I enjoyed it every bit as much as I did the first time, although there is (to me) one enormous and fairly obvious clue about whodunnit. The mix is very typical of Crofts. Big business shenanigans, coupled with boats, tides and visits to France exercise the mind of Inspector French, ever theorising and ever meticulous. What was especially noteworthy here was that gaining restitution for the swindled investors is deemed as important as tracking down the murderer.
