Review: Great underlying subject matter in view of the politics regarding race and sexual equality {inequality} currently raging. Very much relevant now, especially since the book was written almost fifty years ago. Straightforward, uncomplicated and brilliant, perhaps why Spenser has not made the transition to the big screen successfully. Now that is a crying shame.

Review: I've read the first three Spenser novels and really enjoyed them. I came to Robert Parker from Cole & Pike. Spenser and Cole are similar characters, who follow their own inflexible honour code, particularly when it involves the strong preying on the weak, and not always within the letter of the law. While this story holds true to that tradition, the central character spends an inordinate and extraordinary amount of time agonising over 'what it means to be a man'. While this internal (and external, with Susan) narrative may have been in some way satisfying for Robert Parker PhD to write in 1970s USA, I found myself skipping quickly past whole sections of the book that were basically boring as FCUK. Next up is is 'The Judas Goat', but if there's any more of this 1970s angst it'll be time to move on.
