Review: I generally avoid comedy/parody comics/manga. When I try one once in a while, I usually get bored quickly. I need my stories to be "serious". This is a rare exception. It rides that line between being silly and satisfying well enough to avoid cringe. It's one of my favourite mangas and possibly the most fun one among them. The character development is somewhere between predictable to non-existent. The story is not thought provoking in the slightest. There's next to no world-building. Even the art, while competent, is pretty minimalistic and lacks detail. Somehow none of those things detract from the enjoyment. It is all because of those ridiculous yet funny setups that reward in surprising ways and result in some genuine laugh-out-loud moments. Character's reactions and the protagonist's inner monologue are a highlight as well. It plays on some tropes to great effect. Eventually, I did start wondering a little about where the story will go. But mostly, I want more to see how the characters will react to more crazy situations. Needless to say I'm not stopping on Vol 1.

Review: The Eminence in Shadow looked like something that could be interesting. Our protagonist Cid Kagenou has been reborn into a fantasy world, finding himself in the minor nobility and he dreams of being a mysterious figure who manipulates events from behind the scenes. Cid soon gathers a group of beautiful elf supporters around him to aid in his efforts against the sinister Cult of Diablos, which he has made up, yet there are signs it actually exists. Cid also finds himself involved with a nasty princess. He reminds me a little of Prince Wein, the lead character of the light novel series The Genius Prince's Guide To Raising a Nation Out of Debt. Wein would much prefer being a rich and idle aristocrat but ends up being a brave, resourceful hero. Cid can be a fine warrior when the situation requires, but he also comes across as a fellow who isn't as in control as he thinks. Volume 1 is erratic and I was never sure if I would like or hate it but in the end, I decided that despite the seesaw quality, there is enough potential here to at least consider looking at Volume 2 and see if this series gains ground.
