Review: There's a lot packed into each of these stories – they don't make for the quick easy read you might expect from a short story collection, but they're definitely interesting enough to be worth the concentration required. I loved the way Sherlock's deductions seem almost obvious once they're explained, yet very few are worked out by others until he does that.

Review: Not only to John Watson but to the readers themselves Sherlock Holmes seems like a magician, being able to reconstruct even the most abstruse cases and incidents, that is until he explains how, by the use of his mind and simple logic, he managed to solve yet another mystery. Doyle‘s way of constructing the adventures and cases is witty and always left me yearning for the solution I myself could not seem to work out. Yet what I could not help but notice his stance on people of colour and women. In some of his stories his misogynist attitudes are not only brought forward by Sherlock Holmes himself (who is known to have less respect for the "weaker sex" than for men), but through the way the stories are told and in one case the "weaker constitution of the female sex" is used as an evidential fact in support of the solution of a case. The Sherlock Holmes stories are without any doubt classics and really fun to read. They provide their readers with entertaining, clever and mysterious stories and are thus perfect to forget about reality and the rest of the world. Yet, it is important to keep in mind that they are not perfect or inclusive (apart from some exceptions) and therefore should not be glorified as such.

Description: In the year 1900, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was at the height of his success as a qualified doctor, keen sportsman, writer of historical novels, champion of the oppressed and, most notably, the creator of that honourable, fearless, and eminently sensible master-detective Sherlock Holmes. Every new Holmes story was greeted with great anticipation and confidence in the knowledge that, however complex the crime, the supremely intelligent and logical detective would solve it. But in 1916 Conan Doyle surprised his readers by declaring that he believed in spiritualism. And when, in 1922, Doyle published a book in which he professed to believe in fairies, his devotees were nonplussed. How could the creator of the inexorably logical Sherlock Holmes claim to believe in something as vague, esoteric, and unproven as the paranormal? In this fascinating study of the life of the creator of one of the greatest detectives of all time, Dr Andrew Norman traces the origin of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's strange beliefs. Can it be that Doyle's alcoholic father holds the key to the unanswered questions about his son? What was Doyle's involvement in the notorious 'Cottingley Fairies' affair? By delving into medical records and the writings of Doyle himself, Dr Norman unravels a mystery as exciting as any of the cases embarked upon by the great Sherlock Holmes!. Description: A medical student at the University of Edinburgh, Arthur Conan Doyle studied under the vigilant eye of Dr Joseph Bell. He observed as Dr Bell identified a patient's occupation, hometown and ailments from the smallest details of dress, gait and speech. Although Doyle was training to be a surgeon, he was cultivating essential knowledge that would help him to define the art of the detective novel. From Doyle's early days surrounded by poverty and violence, through to his first days as a surgeon, Michael Sims traces the circuitous yet inevitable development of Arthur Conan Doyle as the father of the modern mystery. The incomparable Sherlock Holmes emerges as a product of Doyle's varied lessons in the classroom and professional life. 'Fascinating. A stimulating contribution to our never-ending fascination with Holmes himself, and, even more perhaps, his genial creator.' - Sunday Times. • Waterstones Conan Doyle

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Ground-breaking biography of the creator of fiction's best loved detective Though Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's name is recognised the world over, for decades he was overshadowed by his creation, Sherlock Holmes - one of literature's most enduring characters. Conan Doyle was a man of many contradictions. Romantic, energetic, idealistic and upstanding, he could also be selfish and foolhardy. Lycett assembles the many threads of Conan Doyle's life, including the lasting impact of his domineering mother and his alcoholic father; his affair with a younger woman while his wife lay dying; and his fanatical pursuit of scientific data to prove and explain various supernatural phenomena. Lycett combines access to new material with assiduous research and penetrating insight to offer the most comprehensive, lucid and sympathetic portrait yet of Conan Doyle's personal journey from student to doctor, from world-famous author to ardent spiritualist.
