Review: If you are looking for a horror story that is genuinely creepy, sinister and uncanny then look no further. The Great God Pan is a tale that will stay with you long after you switch out the lights and try to sleep. Penned by the hand of Arthur Machen this proto-Lovecraftian tale (Lovecraft acknowledged his literary debt to the work of Machen) tells of a malevolent elder god, reaching through the ages to the present day, and of the fate of those who would seek out the great god Pan. Machen himself was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and fellow occultist Austin Spare provided illustrations in some editions (though sadly not this one). This biographical side note adds an extra air of believability to the story, and makes it a must for those with a love of the esoteric arts (indeed, I think that this would go perfectly with Somerset Maugham's The Magician). Finally, and perhaps most importantly, IT'S ABSOLUTELY FREE! So what are you waiting for?

Review: This is a direct copy of the Project Gutenberg version of the book. For anyone who doesn't know, Project Gutenberg is all about providing free open-access to out of copyright texts like The Great God Pan. This Kindle version hasn't even been formatted to fit properly on Kindle screens so it looks terrible and is hard to read. They haven't even bothered to remove the Gutenberg terms of re-distribution at the end which, ironically, request that the paratext added by Gutenberg be removed. This is so so so terrible and lazy. And it's even worse to consider that Amazon is actually charging for it. The story itself is actually pretty interesting and weird so I'd recommend it, just not this version of it. This edition is unreadable.

Description: .and then the music was so loud, so beautiful that I couldn't think of anything else. I was completely lost to the music, enveloped by melody which was part of Pan.' In 1894, Arthur Machen's landmark novella The Great God Pan was published, sparking the sinister resurgence of the pagan goat god. Writers of the late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, such as Oscar Wilde, E. M. Forster and Margery Lawrence, took the god's rebellious influence as inspiration to spin beguiling tales of social norms turned upside down and ancient ecological forces compelling their protagonists to ecstatic heights or bizarre dooms. Assembling ten tales and six poems - along with Machen's novella - from the boom years of Pan-centric literature, this new collection revels in themes of queer awakening, transgression against societal bonds and the bewitching power of the wild as it explores a rapturous and culturally significant chapter in the history of weird fiction. Description: Who was the real King Arthur? What do the historical documents tell us about the Knight of the Round Temple? It is just a chivalric fantasy? The story of Arthur has been handed down to us by Medieval poets and legends - but what if he actually existed and was in fact a great king in the early years of Britain's story. Mike Ashley visits the source material and uncovers unexpected new insights into the legend: there is clear evidence that the Arthurian legends arose from the exploits of not just one man, but at least three originating in Wales, Scotland and Brittany. The true historical Arthur really existed and is distantly related to the present royal family. Waterstones A Brief History of King Arthur - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
