Review: I had read two of FWC's books and was keen to try another. I enjoyed this more than the others and now realise that FWC is famous for his meticulous plotting and in this one Inspector French has his hands full. Set in leafy inter-war Surrey the plot unfurls in stage after stage with twists and turns that French ponders carefully, applies theories, tests them and either retreats to take a different approach or moves on. From the introduction one knows that the clues are in the text and will be explained by reference to page numbers at the end. So reading carefully I spotted some clues and developed some ideas of my own. French of course also had them in bis head, but he was able to bring it together at the end. Intricately plotted, motives and prime movers are exposed, partly as a surprise and partly as 'Great! I thought that would be relevant'. The timeline around the crimes works and the sequence and motives are plausible: however one wonders whether serendipity might have been inordinately kind to the perpetrator - but without serendipity the crimes would not have occurred and Inspector French would not have been called out to The Hog's Back to give us this delicious puzzle. This is more intricate than Inspector French's 'The Sea Mystery' and avoids the completely different, and less engaging, structure of 'The 12.30 from Croydon'. I shall certainly go back to the start of the Inspector French series.

Review: This series varies. Some are really good - the Cheyne Mystery, the 12.30 from Croydon. Some are poor - the Pit Prop Syndicate. Some are in-between - the Box Office Murder . The Hogs back Mystey is mid range. Sometimes the plot is so detailed that we almost get the shoe size of Inspector French and that get boring. But if you want to pass a long fight, this one is OK. By the way, don't bother with "Greatest Case." Not great and not worth the money.
