Review: Wonderful series. Have read all six of Balkan and Levant novels. Brilliant depiction of WW2 from European angle. Great characterisation, both male and female. Incredible ear for language. I was sorry there were no follow-ups; wanted to know what happened to the characters after the war.

Review: Having just read Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet and Avignon Quintet, this trilogy comes in a poor third. It really does illustrate the depth of a truly great writer. OM is not Premier league. I skated through this in less than a week. The setting is wonderful of course but really only a backdrop. There is no malevolence, evil, magic or mystery as with Durrell. The characters, both in speech and actions, just seem clichéd and superficial. As others have noted here, Guy is a frustrating character and I was just praying Harriet would leave him for someone else after 650 pages but it was not to be. The device of her missing the doomed ship is clever of course but then the novel just backtracks to where we started. I blame 'Guy' for everything!
