Description: Are psychopaths 'evil' and untreatable, or do they suffer from a form of mental illness comparable to schizophrenia? Do they have free will? Do we? In this at once terrifying and exhilarating account, neuroscientist Kent Kiehl guides us through the dark world of a psychopath's mind, a disconnected place where emotion is dead and guilt is absent. Drawing on groundbreaking research, including personality surveys and brain imaging scans of thousands of criminals, Kiehl pinpoints the biological machinery of psychopathy and offers a radical new perspective on identifying and treating the psychopaths in our midst. Review: It's an excellent read, very insightful and scientific. At first I was discouraged by the title..why would you even mention the word whisperer when this book gives you the results of years of academic work and studies. In a fun and personal way though! Highly recommended

Review: I was looking for an interesting book on psychopathology of psychopaths and opted for Kiehs’s ‘Whisperer’ (sounds like the ridiculous, ego-boosting sort of title the author might have come up with himself). About 20% of the content was readable, comprising of a few interesting stories and that’s about it. The neuroscience of a psychopathic brain gets boiled down to a handful of tiny blurry, poorly described pictures of brain. A Wikipedia article would tell you more. There’s a reduction of grey matter in the paralimbic system of psychopaths resulting in the infamous deficits in the sphere of emotions and poor behaviour control - that is it. The rest of the book is a boring account of the author’s countless dinners/breakfasts/meetings, impressions, hunches, successes, job offers and of course the MRI! At a certain point he very nearly managed to convince me that he invented the machine. From about page 150 onwards I was skimming through the content looking for stuff on psychopaths through author’s rather detailed descriptions of HIM making his way to an office, HIM researching MRI suppliers, HIM being praised for this and that. I can’t believe I actually finished the book (the ‘just look for the psychopath stuff’ worked quite well) but there was an interesting story about the trial of Brian Dugan at the end (just Google it). I hope I saved you £10! ????
