Review: It soon becomes apparent in this first volume of Michael Palin's diaries that only the lightest of skim reads is needed. There is little to hold the attention in the everyday nature of the entries, and the sense of time and place gets lost amongst lots of information about creating Monty Python. The favourable reaction to this new comedy seems extraordinary when viewed from the perspective of fifty years on. View an old episode now and it positively creaks - it's not aged well. Palin writes about everyday concerns, the development of his career, family life, working relationships, insecurities and doubts, but as the years roll by and he becomes more established, the entries become longer, more tedious, and increasingly jet-setting in their tone. More than anything, career success seems to be about networking and saying yes to pretty much any offer that comes along. Culled from a seemingly enormous archive of material, it's hard to tell if keeping the diary is a habit that cannot be broken, or something more self-indulgent. One volume gives sufficient flavour of things to not have to worry about reading more. Disappointing.
