Review: I wasn’t able to give this zero. Glad I bought a cheap, used copy. Somehow in my 60+ years I’d never read Burroughs. Yes, I was aware of him but hadn’t ever given his work a go. I have to say I’m glad I did, just so that I now know he is probably the most unreadable writer there’s ever been. This book seems to have been written specifically to goad the censor with obscenity, drugs and homosexuality but the pity is that it wasn’t written with any plot or narrative. Yes, some people pretended to “get” it but the whole thing seems to have been a puerile, emperor’s new clothes, attention-seeking pretence at a free speech protest. I recognise it takes a certain degree of skill, or at least stamina, to maintain the contrived, boring “cut up” style over so many pages and it’s got a good title but apart from that I haven’t anything good to say.
