Review: After reading and loving Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, I was nervous for Anne’s book. Her sisters had enchanted me, making me (perhaps foolishly) raise them up onto a pedestal. When it came to reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, I was worried. What if Anne let me down? What if my previously unchallenged love for the Brontës was shaken? Well, I shouldn’t have doubted Anne! This book was a brilliant read, if not infuriating at times due to certain characters (you know who you are)! Helen, and by extension, Anne, was a woman ahead of her time and it was a delight to read. She knew how to handle men who were getting too big for their boots, that’s for sure! The atmosphere was gorgeously written, something the Brontës all have in common it seems. The writing was very accessible for a classic. I’ve never struggled with Charlotte or Emily’s writing either but I think out of all of the sisters Anne’s writing was the most palatable for the modern reader. All in all a splendid book about the struggles of marriage, womanhood and independence. Definitely worth picking up if you want to start (or continue) your journey with classics.

Review: The novel is one of the most explosive of it`s era. It displays all of Victorian social mores, vanity & hypocrisy in all it`s venal, inglorious filth. Yet, Anne Bronte is the lesser known of the family brood; a quiet, thoughtful person, who weighed up all the options before committing to comment. She is no less a literary genius than her sisters, and should be more widely read and appreciated for her sensational writing talent. The Tenant Of Wildfell hall is the stuff legend; an unstoppable indictment of the injustice against women that Victorian men enjoyed for their own selfish benefit. Nothing quite like it had been seen before, as it winkled out the grubby, dirty truth lying at the heart of Victorian society. This edition is a small, pocket sized book that makes the print very difficult to read; so I would suggest a normal sized copy for anyone with eyesight problems.

Description: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is Anne Bronte's second and most celebrated novel. Set in the dramatic northern landscape made familiar by the author's more famous sisters, it tells the story of Helen Graham, a mysterious single woman who rents the semi-ruinous Hall of the title. With a child but no husband, Helen divides the community between those who admire her charm and spirit and those who suspect her morals. Chief among her supporters is a local farmer, Gilbert Markham, who tells her story. Written before The Tenant, Agnes Grey, based on the author's own experience, explores the position of women in Victorian society through the story of a young woman forced to work as a governess when her father is ruined financially. Description: Anne Bronte: for so long underestimated, from her own day to modern times. But why exactly has this remarkably talented and pioneering author been so overlooked? Anne's writing has often been compared harshly with that of Charlotte and Emily - as if living in her sisters' shadows throughout her life wasn't enough. But her reputation, literary and personal, has changed dramatically since Agnes Grey was first published in 1846. Then, shocked reviewers complained of her 'crudeness' and 'vulgarity' - words used to this day to belittle women writing about oppression. Her second and most famous work, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, was groundbreaking in its subject matter: marital and alcohol abuse and the rights of married women. A book that refused to sweep difficult truths under the carpet. A book so ahead of its time that even her sisters weren't ready for it, Charlotte being one of its harshest critics. And yet could this even be the best of all the Bronte works? With such a contradictory life and legacy: who was Anne, really? It's time to find out.
