Review: Just started to learn German and its a great book lots of nice pictures and things to do. I use it with German for dummies and am making good progress.

Review: I use these books in evening classes (when I have to) as they are popular with most evening class providers, but personally I don't like them. They launch in a flurry of difficult vocabulary and constructions without explanation leaving any but the most intrepid learners baffled right from the start - what a better way of confirming the myth that German is an impossibly difficult language to learn. With this type of book - certainly it is! This book essentially provides scenarios together with (unexplained) phrases and much (unspecified and unexplained) vocabulary. Any teacher using such a book with good effect will have to provide a lot of additional material and guidance which should not be necessary for a modern teaching method. This book gives the impression of comprehensively covering all important aspects of travel and everyday life in German, but in the end it doesn't teach the language and what it teaches, it doesn't do well for either learner or teacher. My verdict: It's not the worst of the many methods around, but I can't really recommend it as an effective resource.
