Review: This was an interesting read. Personally, I do not trust "mental health professionals" and I believe Dr. Glasser's criticism is well-founded. I agree with much of what Dr. Glasser advocates, but on some issues, I believe he is way off course. He is dead wrong when it comes to the parenting methods he puts forth. He gives the example of how his wife's parents dealt with her rebellious and problematic behavior-- they ignored it. While her behavior spiraled out of control, they simply kept reassuring her of their love and devotion as they stood by and made no effort to intervene. He insists that it worked (to a degree, maybe?) with her, but it certainly would not work in every case. I do agree that unhappiness is a frequent cause of mental distress, but I do not believe that is the only cause. Glasser states that to be mentally healthy we must be happy, and to be happy, we must not have any contentious personal relationships. That's a very big order. He insists that we must get along with everyone with whom we come in contact, whether they treat us well or not. If letting boorish people walk all over me is the key to happiness, then I can do with a little unhappiness. I would be a great deal more unhappy, and therefore, mentally unhealthy, if I were to let myself be insulted or misused by the cretins of this world. In summation, I believe the criticism of the psychiatric "industry" (it is a huge money maker, afterall) are valid. But, I cannot subscribe fully to his methods of achieving happiness, and "mental health." BTW, I consider myself to be exceeding healthy, both mentally and physically, and that was not achieved by allowing myself to be shat upon.

Description: A powerful and impassioned defence of psychiatry, urging the Left to confront the harsh realities of mental illness' - William Davis, author of The Happiness Industry A new edition of one of the most significant and credible critiques of the anti-psychiatry movement. As relevant today as it was when first published in 1982, the book changed the conversation on mental health and illness, demanding that we assess its relationship to the wider decay of social institutions. Dissecting the work of popular anti-psychiatric thinkers, Erving Goffman, R.D. Laing, Michel Foucault and Thomas Szasz, Sedgwick exposed the conservative undercurrents and false hopes represented by the alternative psychiatry of the sixties and seventies, challenging the very real impact it had on our collective responsibility to look after the mentally ill. With a new introduction that highlights the relevance of Sedgwick's demands for modern mental health movements, the practice of psychiatry and for left-wing activists, this new edition further cements Psycho Politics' cult classic status. Description: Our everyday lives are increasingly intertwined with psychiatry and discussions of mental health. Yet the dominant medical discipline of psychiatry remains surrounded by controversy. Is mental distress really an illness like any other, treatable by drugs? Can psychiatrists differentiate between mental disorders normal eccentricities, anxieties or even sadness? Should the power of psychiatrists be challenged by the knowledge of those with lived experience of mental ill health? In this penetrating analysis, Nikolas Rose critiques the powerful part that psychiatry has come to play in the lives of so many across the world. A series of chapters, each tackling an area of dispute head on, opens wide the terrain of debate addressing issues such as advances in brain science, the politics of Western psychiatry's spread across the globe, and recent evidence of social adversity's role in producing mental ill health. The answers we find to these pressing questions will shape the psychiatric futures that are being brought into existence. Ultimately, this book proposes a radically different future, no less evidence-based or rigorous, and indeed far more attuned to the realities of mental health, and argues that, as a branch of social medicine, another psychiatry is possible.
