Review: I’m in the second year of a counselling course, moving from Person-Centred to Psychdynamic theory. I found this book invaluable as an introduction to a central part of Freud’s approach, which in its original, scientific, of-it’s-time form, I found I couldn’t respond to on an emotional level. Luckily the author, a practicing analyst with a huge experience of helping clients discover their whole selves, wrote this book with the intention of helping people who weren’t in therapy, go along this road of self-discovery: a true “self-help” book indeed. I found that the friendly, approachable way it’s written, and the clear way it’s laid out, really works! I’ve recognised many previously hidden truths about myself, as well as opening the door to a whole world of knowledge that I am now finding myself able to explore with curiosity and enjoyment.

Review: Dr Burgo is clearly influenced by Freud and explains his teaching in a nutshell. He goes on to examine the classic defences Freud identified in his work and how to identify, understand and disable them. However, he fails to clearly explain how we can get emotionally damaged when children. Nor does he give a clear path out from the psychological games we often play in life. The book would be better and more effective as a self help book if he broadened it out by including something about Attachment Theory and CBT.

Description: ** As featured on BBC Radio 4 this Christmas, narrated by Alex Jennings ** Although we are all familiar with Joseph - from a legion of retellings of the Christmas story - he remains, for many, a shadowy figure about whom we know very little and who is rarely given much thought, if any. This beautiful meditative fable, imagined as it might be told by the archangel Gabriel, helps us to understand who Joseph was and how he might have felt about the part he was called to play in the Greatest Story Ever Told. Joseph and the Three Gifts follows Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem, in hiding in Egypt and a return to his carpentry in Nazareth as Jesus grows from boy to man to messiah. And it asks what Joseph might have done with the Magi's gifts of frankincense, gold and myrrh. A wonderful story for all ages, perfect for Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. The cover and interior illustrations for Joseph and the Three Gifts are by Henry Martin, an artist, ordained Anglican minister and author of Eavesdropping.

  • Waterstones Joseph Gray's Camouflage

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Art? What has art ever done for us as a family?' In the First World War, artist-soldier Joseph Gray drew and painted scenes of battle, his illustrations appearing in the popular press and his canvases sold to museums. But after struggling through the next decade and facing the threat of another war, Joseph had found a secret new calling: the art of camouflage. As he went from representing reality to disguising it, Joseph's growing interest in camouflage concealed another, deeper subterfuge. He was leading a double life, and would eventually leave his family for the woman that he loved. Joseph Gray's Camouflage is a multi-layered story of art, war, love and deception. Beyond attempting to pin down the image of a man who eludes us at every turn, it also traces the development of camouflage between the two wars and shines a light on the unlikely band of artists who made it happen. Though private letters, diaries, archives and interviews Joseph's great-granddaughter Mary Horlock pieces together the truth that was once lost, and brings his far-from-ordinary life back into focus.
