Description: Dublin was the cockpit of the Irish Revolution. It was in the capital that Dáil Éireann convened and built an alternative government to challenge the authority of Dublin Castle; it was where the munitions strike that crippled the British war effort in 1920 began and it was where rival intelligence organisations played out their deadly game of cat and mouse. But it was also a city where ambushes became a daily occurrence and ordinary civilians were caught in the deadly crossfire. Restrictions on travel, military curfews and the threat of internment would ultimately make normal life impossible. In A City in Turmoil Pádraig Yeates takes up the story from the end of the First World War covered in A City in Wartime. As in his previous work, he uncovers unknown and neglected aspects of the Irish Revolution, including the role that the Bank of Ireland played in keeping the city solvent, the rise of the Municipal Reform Association to challenge the hegemony of Sinn Féin and Labour, how one of Ireland's leading businessmen started out as a bagman for Michael Collins and how, ultimately, many Dubliners found it easier to sympathise with the fight for the Republic than participate in or pay for it.

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The city of Preston in Lancashire is renowned for its industrial heritage, with centuries of textile manufacturing and its boom years during the Industrial Revolution. However, as this book reveals, industry is but one aspect of its rich and fascinating past. In Preston: A Potted History, local author Keith Johnson explores the city's heritage, charting its journey from earliest times right up to the present day. He highlights the significant events, incredible achievements and enthralling interludes that have taken place in the city, which was known in Saxon times as 'Priest's Town'. Not surprisingly monks and monasteries, churches and chapels, preachers and parsons have all contributed to the growth of the place. Through successive centuries the author looks at Preston's people and their progress, the transport and trade, industry and innovations, celebrations and ceremonies, education and entertainment, along with the political and military conflicts. This engaging and informative book reveals the poverty, turmoil, triumphs and transformation that Preston has undergone throughout history. Illustrated throughout, this accessible historical portrait will be of great interest to residents, visitors and all those with links to the city.

Description: Local Hero: The Geoff Merrick Story is the most anticipated book on any player ever to pull on the red shirt of Bristol City. An England schoolboy international, Geoff turned down a host of top teams to sign for his local club. He became the Robins' youngest captain at 18 and eventually led them back to the top flight. During City's stay in Division One, Merrick was seen as one of the country's top defenders, but his life and career were thrown into turmoil when he and seven other players were asked to rip up their contracts to save the club from bankruptcy. This they did, and today their sacrifice is commemorated by a plaque outside Ashton Gate, yet it still goes down as the blackest time in City's history. It is a chapter in Geoff's life that he has never spoken about in depth - until now. When life threw Geoff and his family a cruel twist, he showed the qualities of bravery, self-belief and determination, the very traits that had characterised his performances on the pitch. Local Hero is the ultimate tale of not giving up. Waterstones Life with the Robins and Beyond - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Description: WINNER OF THE PENDERYN MUSIC BOOK PRIZE 2018 In the 1950s and 1960s, Memphis, Tennessee, was the launch pad of musical pioneers such as Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Al Green and Isaac Hayes, and by 1968 was a city synonymous with soul music. It was a deeply segregated city, ill at ease with the modern world and yet to adjust to the era of civil rights and racial integration. Stax Records offered an escape from the turmoil of the real world for many soul and blues musicians, with much of the music created there becoming the soundtrack to the civil rights movements. The book opens with the death of the city's most famous recording artist, Otis Redding, who died in a plane crash in the final days of 1967, and then follows the fortunes of Redding's label, Stax/Volt Records, as its fortunes fall and rise again. But, as the tense year unfolds, the city dominates world headlines for the worst of reasons: the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King.
