Review: I had listened to the programme on Radio 4 and then my friend was given this book and started to read it. She suggested we went to the British Museum to see our favourite pieces (incidentally I think the BM could do a much better job of sign posting these pieces - for example on their website they said the Benin bronzes were not on display but almost by accident we saw them in the basement on display) The text in the book is almost but not quite identical to the radio scripts it’s interesting to see what was altered. In the end having the book on Kindle on my phone was the most useful for the BM trip. The BM’s own app is also very good but didn’t seem to cover all 100 pieces.

Review: This is a very interesting and informative book. I own a hardback copy which has a full page colour photograph of each object at the beginning of each chapter. This is essential to fully appreciate the accompanying text. Unfortunately, the paperback copy I bought from Amazon as a gift for some-one only has small black and white thumbnails with poor visible detail at the start of the chapters. There are a couple of sections with a total of 28 colour photographs in the book but these are poorly printed, badly cropped, and mostly a third page or half page in size. 5 stars for the hardback version, 2 stars for the paperback.

  • The History Press Ltd A A History of Women in 100 Objects

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: The History Press Ltd

Description: The history of the world has been told in objects. But what about the objects that tell the history of women? What are the items that symbolise the journey of women from second-class citizens with no legal rights, no vote and no official status to the powerful people they are today? And what are the objects that still oppress women, even now? From the corset to the contraceptive pill, the bones of the first woman to Rosa Parks's mugshot and the iconic Mary Quant cape, A History of Women in 100 Objects documents the developing role of women in society through the lens of the inanimate objects that touched women's lives, were created by women or that at some time - perhaps even still - oppressed them. Woven by two leading historians, this complex, fascinating and vital tale of women and womanhood is told with a lightness of touch and depth of experience that will appeal to all those interested in women's history. • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC A Cultural History of Objects in the Medieval Age

    Price: £25.99

    Brand: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC

Description: A Cultural History of Objects in the Medieval Age covers the period 500 to 1400, examining the creation, use and understanding of human-made objects and their consequences and impacts. The power and agency of objects significantly evolved over this time. Exploring objects and artefacts within art, technology, and everyday life, the volume challenges our understanding of both life worlds and object worlds in medieval society. The 6 volume set of the Cultural History of Objects examines how objects have been created, used, interpreted and set loose in the world over the last 2500 years. Over this time, the West has developed particular attitudes to the material world, at the centre of which is the idea of the object. The themes covered in each volume are objecthood; technology; economic objects; everyday objects; art; architecture; bodily objects; object worlds. Julie Lund is Professor at the University of Oslo, Norway. Sarah Semple is Professor at Durham University, UK. Volume 2 in the Cultural History of Objects set. Price: £20.00

    Brand: The History Press Ltd

Description: It was in the closing year of the First World War, on 1 April 1918, that the Royal Air Force was born from the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service. Since then, the RAF has helped lead the world in the development of aviation and air warfare. From the fighters and bombers of the Second World War, through the early jet age and into modern remotely piloted air systems, the last hundred years' development has been astronomical, and the human story no less impressive. Here Peter Jacobs gathers the most poignant objects of the RAF's proud history and displays them together, in full splendid colour, for the first time. Aircraft, memorials, uniforms, equipment, and some items you would never expect - it's all here, ready to be explored. Description: Digital objects, in their simplest form, are data. They are also a new kind of industrial object that pervades every aspect of our life today | ??as online videos, images, text files, e-mails, blog posts, Facebook events. Yet, despite their ubiquity, the nature of digital objects remains unclear. On the Existence of Digital Objects conducts a philosophical examination of digital objects and their organizing schema by creating a dialogue between Martin Heidegger and Gilbert Simondon, which Yuk Hui contextualizes within the history of computing. How can digital objects be understood according to individualization and individuation? Hui pursues this question through the history of ontology and the study of markup languages and Web ontologies; he investigates the existential structure of digital objects within their systems and milieux. With this relational approach toward digital objects and technical systems, the book addresses alienation, described by Simondon as the consequence of mistakenly viewing technics in opposition to culture. Interdisciplinary in philosophical and technical insights, with close readings of Husserl, Heidegger, and Simondon as well as the history of computing and the Web, Hui's work develops an original, productive way of thinking about the data and metadata that increasingly define our world.
