  • Bloomsbury Publishing PLC German Automatic Rifles 1941–45

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Bloomsbury Publishing PLC

Description: This book explores the origins, development, combat use and lasting influence of Nazi Germany's automatic rifles, focusing on the Gew 41(W), Gew 43/Kar 43, FG 42 and MP 43/St G 44. The Blitzkrieg campaigns of 1939-40 convinced many observers that most infantry combat took place at closer ranges than the 750-1,000m. From 1941 Germany's arms designers took note and produced a new series of infantry firearms. This study not only provides a detailed technical description of each weapon, but also explores how the firearms performed on the battlefields of World War II. The combat takes us from the FG 42 in the hands of Fallschirmjäger at Monte Cassino through to St G 44s being used by Waffen-SS soldiers on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. Postwar service is also studied, such as the Gew 43's adoption by the Czech Army and the St G 44's use by the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. Setting each firearm in its tactical and historical context, and employing striking photographs and full-colour artwork, firearms expert Chris Mc Nab sets out the absorbing story of this distinctive and influential series of weapons. • Verso Books The Automatic Fetish

    Price: £19.99

    Brand: Verso Books

Description: The Automatic Fetish traces Marx's analysis of capital, step by step, through the material compiled posthumously as the third volume of Capital. Identifying the critique of value as the central through line of the entire work, Beverley Best elaborates a theory of movement through which the capital machine generates social forms of appearance as the inversion of its inner operating mechanisms. Neither a return to basics nor a new-fangled reconstruction, The Automatic Fetish eschews novelty to show once again that Marx rewards careful study.- 'If I had to choose one book that would make the case for the relevance of Marx's critique of political economy to the humanities, this might very well be it' Colleen Lye, co-editor of After Marx- 'The contribution of The Automatic Fetish is hard to exaggerate' Nicholas Brown, author of Autonomy- 'Will make a significant contribution to the wider field of materialist theory' Joshua Clover, author of Riot. Strike. Riot- 'In Best's hands, Capital becomes not only fascinating but useful, down to its last detail. Written with clarity, focus, and urgency, Best has unreconstructed Marx for our times' Richard Dienst, author of The Bonds of Debt- 'A groundbreaking book' Werner Bonefeld, author of A Critical Theory of Economic Compulsion- 'That rare work of theory whose practical implications just sing out loud. Surely among the most useful books on Capital III ever written' Christopher Nealon, author of The Matter of Capital- 'Brilliant, eloquent, and precise. Best has given us one of the most profound re-readings of Capital to have appeared in a generation and an essential source' Neil Larsen, author of Determinations.

  • The Crowood Press Ltd Complicated Watches and Their Repair

    Price: £18.50

    Brand: The Crowood Press Ltd

Description: Dealing with a complicated watch used to be a rare job for the watch repairer, but with the popularity of the automatic, it is almost commonplace. Furthermore, the increased interest in calendar work, alarm watches, and chronographs will undoubtedly bring more and more complicated work into the workshop. This book deals with complicated work essentially from the repairer's point of view. The action of each mechanism is briefly and clearly described because understanding this is essential to proper servicing, repair and testing for functioning. Dismantling and assembly instructions are given, as well as oiling charts and - most important - hints on fault-finding and their rectification. Another essential feature of the book is that it deals with all complicated work - from the relatively simple automatic to the triple-complicated watch with chronograph, calendar and repeater work, and the very complicated clock watch. Exceptional care has been taken in the preparation of diagrams, which have been drawn from actual movements in various stages of assembly, so that the reader can actually work with the book illustrations beside the watch itself. As always with books by Donald de Carle, instructions are easy to follow and there is no reason why anyone well versed in ordinary work and able to use watchmakers' tools should not become a specialist in complicated watches and their repair. • John Wiley and Sons Ltd Ex Captivitate Salus

    Price: £15.99

Brand: John Wiley and Sons Ltd

Description: When Germany was defeated in 1945, both the Russians and the Americans undertook mass internments in the territories they occupied. The Americans called their approach 'automatic arrest." Carl Schmitt, although not belonging in the circles subject to automatic arrest, was held in one of these camps in the years 1945-6 and then, in March 1947, in the prison of the international tribunal in Nuremberg, as witness and 'possible defendant." A formal charge was never brought against him. Schmitt's way of coping throughout the years of isolation was to write this book. In Ex Captivitate Salus, or Deliverance from Captivity, Schmitt considers a range of issues relating to history and political theory as well as recent events, including the Nazi defeat and the newly emerging Cold War. Schmitt often urged his readers to view the book as though ● it were a series of letters personally directed to each one of them. Hence there is a decidedly personal dimension to the text, as Schmitt expresses his thoughts on his own career trajectory with some pathos, while at the same time emphasising that 'this is not romantic or heroic prison literature." This reflective work sheds new light on Schmitt's thought and personal situation at the beginning of a period of exile from public life that only ended with his death in 1985. It will be of great value to the many students and scholars in political theory and law who continue to study and appreciate this seminal theorist of the twentieth century.
