Review: This is a much darker and more extreme end of horror than the earlier Avantia, with few sympathetic characters or animals. The two young heroes learn that Tom's father has been bitten by a werewolf type of hound, and will change into an evil beast. They go to try to prevent this by killing the person - not a beast - who controls the werehounds. The quest brings them underground to one of those lava lakes that oddly, people never knew existed, which oddly enough has a castle carved from white rock, white not being a basalt or granite colour. The earlier books used to get natural detail correct and were interesting, but I found this one a lot more boring as it was just scramble, run away, whips, dogs, snarl and gloat, run away, fight. The writers in the ghostwriting team have obviously changed to people who just like zombie shooter computer games. This is an unbiased review.
