Description: Neuroscientific discoveries have begun to illuminate the workings of the active brain in intricate detail. In fact, sometimes it seems that in order to be a cutting-edge therapist, not only do you need knowledge of traditional psychotherapeutic models, but a solid understanding of the role the brain plays as well. But theory is never enough. You also need to know how to apply the theories to work with actual clients during sessions. In easy-to-understand prose, Being a Brain-Wise Therapist reviews the basic principles about brain structure, function, and development, and explains the neurobiological correlates of some familiar diagnostic categories. You will learn how to make theory come to life in the midst of clinical work, so that the principles of interpersonal neurobiology can be applied to a range of patients and issues, such as couples, teens, and children, and those dealing with depression, anxiety, and other disorders. Liberal use of exercises and case histories enliven the material and make this an essential guide for seamlessly integrating the latest neuroscientific research into your therapeutic practice.

Review: I'm currently training as a Dramatherapist and this book is on the recommended reading for one of my uni modules. I have to say that I've found it really helpful on both an academic level and to incorporate into my practise on placements. I know a few people have talking of 'dumbing-down' of the neuro science but I really didn't find that. I'm studying at master's-degree level although admittedly I do not have a science background at all. As I understand it that is really the point with this book, and as someone who is studying and practising a humanistic psychotherapy I found the book to be what it claims in the title - A practical guide to interpersonal neurobiology. I have not yet finished the book but have found it has inspired me to look further into the research that really does affect the field in which I am hoping to work. I wanted an introduction to the field and I found that, and a lot more contained within this book. I really would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the basics or who studies/practises psychotherapy.

Review: What is the point of buying a book written in 2002 - when so much research has been written since ?
