Review: This is a very graphic, deeply troubling account of the atrocities of the 1974 Ethiopian revolution and the murderous reign of Mengistu Haile Mariam, who still lives in exile in Zimbabwe. The descriptions of torture and death are shocking, perhaps the most moving account being of a mother burying her young son (p268). Maaze Mengiste traces how the social injustice of aristocracy generates revolutionary student movements which are then uncontrollable. Factions vie for power, with the most brutal emerging as victors. Everyone faces a huge moral dilemma, individuals compromise, and large numbers become the thugs of the new regime. Extensive social control is pervasive and powerful, fed by denunciations, imprisonment, torture and summary execution. Mengiste interweaves this well with a single family’s story, creating a very meaningful narrative. It’s both a shocking book, and excellent literature.

Review: I loved the Shadow King, but I found this book lacked the character depth and writing style. The history here is frightening and the descriptions hard to read. Too horrific for me I'm afraid.
