Review: Born for This illustrates options for how to organise your career and your life, encouraging readers to think outside of the dry, conventional careers advice they probably received at school. It takes an abstract view of career and highlights the importance of combining skill, pleasure and money in your career. If you are looking for advice on how to climb the career ladder we are all told about at school and in many other career advice books, keep looking. If you prefer to take a creative and proactive approach to finding a fulfilling career, don't hesitate — buy this book right now. Chris Guillebeau's writing style is conversational and friendly in tone, which won't appeal to everyone — but this book wasn't written for everyone. It has been written for people who share a certain philosophy: who want to challenge themselves and lead a fun, satisfying life which benefits both themselves and others. People who have realised that the conventional careers model we are sold rarely exists anymore and doesn't suit everyone anyway. Born for This provides you with a starting point for exploring career options. It begins with chapters on the best strategies to adopt — how to increase your chances of success (hint: it involves playing the right game in the first place) and which skills to develop. It then presents different career models, including You, Inc (considering yourself as a company), side hustles, the self-employed employee and (my favourite) the DIY rockstar. The principles explained are demonstrated with accounts of people who have made their careers and lives work for themselves, basing their choices on personal priorities rather than mainstream goals. I found these accounts very helpful — while the types of work undertaken were often very different to the work I do, learning about how real people have taken control of their careers yielded a lot of practical advice which I can (and will) use. I recommend Born for This to anyone who feels they don't fit into conventional career roles. As someone with long term mental health problems, my own career path has been... interesting. Now that I am well enough to work, I need to find ways to work around my mental illness and to work with the constraints involved, not against them. This book has inspired me and reminded me that my aims are achievable.

Review: Slightly disappointed by this book. As with so many self-help/career advice books, there is plenty of common sense advice and reframing, but almost no actionable advice. I'm currently looking for new work after leaving my last job as a teacher and found nothing in this book that I could turn into action. I have had many different jobs, from corporate sector to teaching to police to sales, and have not lived the kind of lifestyle the author does, nor do I know anyone who does. Unfortunately the book gives almost no advice that one can put into practice. For every page that offers anything close to useful advice, there are over 50 pages of useless anecdotes and over-simplified and generalised reframing that I don't think will be of use to anyone. Advice includes: You probably already know loads of people that can help you find the ideal career you want. - Well, no I don't. Decide on the job title you want. - Well, I've never worked for a company that would let employees decide on their own title. Create an artist's statement of future self. - Well, great, now I've done that waste of time I still need to be pragmatic and find a job that will probably in no way relate to what I want because I have to be practical and just go for what's in the market. Get a job that you love, pays really well and that you're really good at. - This was my favourite bit of advice! Did I need to drop £10 to be told this? The worst thing is, at the end of every chapter the author promises to show you how, then the book gives no advice on how to get that job that would be ideal for you. Talk to your boss about their priorities and yours. - Because we all work with bosses that care about their employees' priorities and will help them, right? Come out ahead by losing money. - Right... The author takes anecdotes from a range of people that are very much the exception to the rule and then decides to give very generic, simplistic advice based on those anecdotes. I would be very surprised if anyone finds something actionable in this book that makes any difference in their life. Other rambling, useless anecdotes include the time the author won $50 in a casino (your guess is as good as mine as to how that helps you find your ideal career/business), the time the author drove a colleague to a village and back in Africa (to show you how you must be totally indispensable to your colleagues), and include measurements in your eBay sales (because everyone has made a fortune on eBay right?) This could be another author that gives advice on getting rich and happy because his books about getting rich and happy have sold so well he is now rich and happy. If you would like a book on how passive income works, rich dad poor dad is still the best. For a book on business, the millionaire Fastlane is the best in my opinion, and I'm still looking for a book on job satisfaction/finding the right job for you! As a side note, I'm also now aware of the marketing gimmicks used by authors and book promotors, having people on emailing lists write reviews for free extras etc. I'm very cautious about overly positive reviews about books in this genre.
