Review: My grandson loves Tom Fletcher, so I’m hoping he’ll love this book from Ivor Baddiel. A great cover, enhanced with a gold star and lettering, that really makes it stand out. 322 pages, so a decent sized softback book. The text is a great size for the age group of 7-10 year olds, and the black and white drawings really enhance the story. Someone is threatening the country’s biggest new star ??, a TV talent show ????. The secret service send in two undercover children, to find out who, with the help of their father, a now failing comedian. My grandson is running out of books to read during this last lockdown, so I know this will be a welcomed book. I’m looking forward to him telling me all about it.

Review: I read Britain’s Biggest Star … Is Dad? to my eight-year-old over the course of about ten days, a couple of chapters a night depending on length. The story stretches to just over 320 pages and whilst there are some black and white illustrations, they appear quite infrequently. The story is basically a whodunnit with two kids taking on the role of spies to try and save a Britain’s Got Talent style show from a mystery saboteur. The titular Dad is a contestant on the show, which gives the young spies the chance to get behind the scenes and figure out what’s going on. I'll be honest with you; I didn't really enjoy this book. Dad is vain and completely inept and the children end up looking after him most of the time. This might have worked better if the book was funnier or the characters were more likeable, but it's not and they aren't. The story tries too hard to implicate all the characters in the plot. This results in the whole book rambling on for far too long as suspicious character after suspicious character is introduced. The end was less of a revelation and more of a relief. At the end of the day my eight-year-old listened... fairly attentively throughout and said that he enjoyed it, hence three stars.
