Description: A breathtaking tale of the rich, wild world and all its wonder from acclaimed nature writer and Costa Award-shortlisted novelist, Melissa Harrison - the perfect read for children for spring and summer! Three tiny, ancient beings - Moss, Burnet and Cumulus, once revered as Guardians of the Wild World - wake from winter hibernation in their beloved ash tree home. When it is destroyed, they set off on an adventure to find more of their kind, a journey which takes them first into the deep countryside and then the heart of a city. Helped along the way by birds and animals, the trio search for a way to survive and thrive in a precious yet disappearing world. The breathtaking children's debut from acclaimed nature writer and literary fiction novelist, Melissa Harrison, author of All Among the Barley and At Hawthorn Time: shortlisted for the Costa Book Award and longlisted for the Baileys Prize. Inspired by 1942 classic The Little Grey Men by BB, with shades of The Borrowers. A tale of disappearing wilderness that couldn't be more relevant in today's environmental crisis, brought to life for children by three tiny, funny, eternal beings - the hidden folk. Review: One of the best books I've read. A lovely story for children, but so much more. It made me realise how long it has been since I was woken by the dawn chorus, or heard a skylark. But the part that really "got to me" was in chapter 16,staring "What had been a faint deer track through the undergrowth...."I have watched as bridleways have become tracks for scramble bikes and four by fours, ultimately covered by tarmac, leaving a very fragmented network for walker and horse rider, necessitating long stretches of road between them (much to the annoyance of motorists). My home village (once reputed to be the largest by area in England, but sparsely populated), has been infilled, but with no improvement in facilities such as schools, doctors surgeries and even shops (almost non-existent). The local market town has trebled in population in little more than 10 years, with several large planning applications (including one on an archeological site, not to mention the ones perilously close to flood plains). That town's tendrils are creeping out to engulf surrounding villages, and has the added hazard of a large local authority (previously three separate councils, now amalgamated into one, which would love to get its hands on my local authority, which apart from the immediate area is still a largely rural county). I question whether the "genii loci" are fading away because they are no longer needed to protect our green spaces (unlikely), or because there is nothing left to protect (highly probable). I have already pre-ordered the next book in the series and look forward to reading it in a couple of weeks.

Review: Very disappointing… poorly written and unoriginal. Read BB’s book for something more genuine and well-written.
