Review: Gyles Brandreth gives us here a poetry anthology with a bit more. We are told about the importance of poetry, and how learning it, remembering it and reciting it can help our brains, as well as reading it to babies and children can help their language skills, and so on, as well as being given a large amount of poetry to read. Mr Brandreth is obviously on a mission, he wants us all to learn a poem or two and enjoy ourselves doing it, and so there are tips and advice about picking and planning how to remember a piece, which if you have ever been in a school play, or had to give a speech or some type of performance you will probably know much of. Along with this the poems that have been selected for us are of a size that can be learnt relatively quickly and easily, although near the back of the book are suggestions of ones that are much longer. Indeed, in the main text, we read of a man who learnt the whole of Paradise Lost, but this book is for more minor feats of memory. With a number of chapters, it is of course the poetry that will delight everyone, and there are limericks, songs, biblical passages, and even some of Shakespeare’s speeches, all of them well worth reading. What I found especially good about this book as a whole, is that Gyles Brandreth instils with his own enthusiasm that into us, so we are just as eager to read and learn, even possibly if you are not a particular poetry lover. I know that some people claim not to like poetry at all, but they are very willing to laugh out loud at some limericks I know, mainly because they are slightly off colour and funny, and we all love a piece of nonsense poetry. We do have limericks here, but they are cleaner ones, so do not worry reading them aloud when there are little ones about. As is shown here as well is how Shakespeare’s writings, due to its rhythms is easy to learn, and why it has remained so popular. Highly enjoyable, and at times quite interesting, this is one of those books that I am sure many will enjoy, even if it is not their normal reading choice. You will obviously know some of the pieces that are presented here, but not all of them, and remember, this is a book for those wanting to learn off by heart a poem or poems, so you may not find your particular favourite here, indeed mine does not appear in these pages, only as a suggestion as a longer piece to learn if you so desire. I must admit, that with the lockdown that we recently have had, and in some places being reinstituted, poetry has been a comfort for many, and so I have been led to believe has increased more and more people to turn to it. Being male, when I was at school it was considered to be a bit namby-pamby, but of course poetry is not, after all someone can write a six hundred page novel on the horrors of war, whereas a poet can give you the same effect, but distilled into a few lines of words.

Review: The correlation between mental health and poetry is important and heavily emphasised by the author. Definitely worth buying this book but why include such a quantity of mostly modern rubbish? Sad to see how Brandreth felt it necessary to include the poem/rant (?) by Larkin on parents. Nasty.
