Review: “Death the Deluxe Edition” collects The Sandman #8 (“The Sound of her Wings”), The Sandman #20 (“Facade”), Vertigo: Winter s Edge #2 (“A Winter’s Tale”), Death: The High Cost of Living #1-3, 9-11: The World’s Finest Comic Book Writers & Artists (“The Wheel”), Death: The Time of Your Life #1-3, The Sandman: Endless Nights (“Death & Venice”), A Death Gallery (“pin-ups”), and Death Talks about Life (AIDS pamphlet). This is a large-format (11 by 71/2 inch) glossy-paper stock hardcover, collecting the first/original/significant appearances of the Sandman’s sister. I read all these when they first appeared as single issues (apart from the ones that didn’t, which I read in the collections). They are still as moving as they were then. As the Bond song goes, “Nobody Does it Better”. If you know what these are, then you know what you are getting. Younger readers might not understand how comics were written in those far-off days of British Vertigo, when you could have stories where nobody got punched or leaped tall buildings with a single bound, and writers could write endless captions (pun unintended) that were readable because the writer could actually write, and win real-world awards for doing so..

Review: Any Neil Gaiman fan is probably already familiar with the two graphic novels (Death: The High Cost of Living & Death: The Time of Your Life) plus her story from the Endless Nights collection and a gallery of art. It only loses a star for me because it reprints Tori Amos's introduction - which was cute in 1994 but hasn't aged well. If Tori had done an update for 25+ years on it could have been wonderful.
