Review: My daughter is just starting to read and has several of these stage 1 books. She loves them, the short sentences are just right to prevent her from being overwhelmed. The book was delivered quickly and in perfect condition.

Review: Dragon Egg by Mallory Loehr- Lexile: 210L Dragon Egg by Mallory Loer and Illustrated by Hala Wittwer is fanciful tale of runaway dragon's egg. As the egg rolls "out of the cave", "down a hill" and "along" a road, children practice recognizing key sight words and positional concepts. The story ends happily for the dragon as she/he is soon reunited with his/ her dragon mother and siblings. However, those purchasing "Dragon Egg" as an early reader might find this Step Into Reading Level One title to be significantly more difficult than some of the other "level one" titles including: •Too Many Cats (Step into Reading) •I Like Stars (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1) •Hot Dog (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1) This is because Step Into Reading uses and adapted version F&P, or Fontas and Pinnell level gradient system. I find this adapted version somewhat lacking when it assigning the level of difficulty of books targeted for early readers. Books that are too hard for a child can damage their reading confidence and discourage a child from reading, so it is very important early readers are matched with books at their level. Those interested in learning more can visit Common Sense Media, there they will find a wealth of information to include a article titled: "Is it Ok for kids to read books outside their reading level." The variance in difficulty in books geared for early and emergent reader (this discrepancy and variance is not limited to titles the Step Into Reading collection) and importance of matching readers with books at the correct level is why I include a Lexile level in many of my book reviews. A book's Lexile Measure can also be found under "Amazon Product Description". However, it has been my experience this detail often gets missed, giving me yet another reason to highlight this important information in my reviews. Hundreds, if not thousands, of reading specialists use Lexile measurements across the nation; and according to Lexile's webpage, Lexile measurements are used in 50 states and with over 35 million children. Parents and other caregivers can also use lexile levels to evaluate whether a book is good fit for their child and more information can be found on Lexile's site. Many of you reading my review may wonder what why this review appears to be mostly about book levels and not about the actual title.... This is because "Dragon's Egg" by Mallory Loehr contains text passages that are several levels above other "level one" titles and Dragon's Egg may be too big of a jump for those children just starting their reading journey. Conversely, "Dragon's Egg" would be a good choice for children who are starting the transition to more difficult books such as: • Fluffy Goes Apple Picking by Kate McMullan • Who's a Pest by Crosby N Bonsall • A Dollar for Penny by Julie Glass Additionally, "Dragon's Egg" by Mallory Loehr would be a great choice for a formative reading assessment of a child's sight word vocabulary as it contains many of of Fry's 1st 100 sight words. Example: • in • a • one • out • of • the • down • comes • up and the simplistic rhyming pattern, on several of the pages, encourages children to recognize word families. In short, as long as the young reader is ready for a challenge, Dragon's Egg by Mallory Loehr, then the book is sure to be a hit with many young readers.

  • Waterstones Letters From Everest

    Price: £18.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A unique collection of unpublished letters from the climbing legend George Mallory to his family, revealing his innermost thoughts about people, places and mountains. On the 8th of June, 1924, George Mallory and Sandy Irvine were seen through a telescope on the upper slopes of Mount Everest. They were never seen alive again. In 1999, Mallory's body was found below the ridge where he was last seen. In the 100 years since his disappearance, many words have been written about Mallory, but very little has ever been published of his own thoughts. Letters from Everest is an eye opening set of personal letters from Mallory to his family, recently discovered hidden in a drawer. In the letters, Mallory is completely open about his life, his climbing and especially the three Everest Expeditions he was a part of - 1921, 1922 and the last in 1924. His writing is full of extraordinary insights - most of which have never been published in any form. They are a unique collection - an actual reflection, possibly the one and only, of the thoughts of a climbing legend who walked into history a century ago. Description: The last climb of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, towards the summit of Mount Everest on 8 June 1924, has been shrouded in mystery for a century. Were they the first humans to stand at the highest point in the world? The discovery of Mallory's body in 1999 did nothing to resolve the mystery. Until now, accounts of their climb have been driven by speculation and preconceived narrative. In this book, which marks the 100th anniversary of the fateful climb, Dr Robert Edwards brings the fresh and original perspective of a mathematician to the story of Mallory and Irvine. Dr Edwards has assembled the contemporary accounts of the early British expeditions, written by the climbers and their leaders, and has identified their anomalies and inconsistencies. He has studied the letters of George Mallory, and has held in his hand the diaries of Andrew Irvine. He has viewed, in person, some of the surviving artifacts: the ice axe found in 1933, and Mallory's boots, recovered in 1999. He has corresponded with modern mountaineers who have climbed Everest. Above all, he has applied mathematics and modern imaging and mapping technology to an analysis of what the 1924 climbers could, and could not, have seen and done.
