Review: My daughter is a great reader but she’s completely put off by chapter books. Yesterday I encouraged her to try this book and she has already finished it! She desperate to get her hands on the rest of the series now!

Review: It was a pleasure to find this book is written in the (often underused in children's literature) first person register (I, my, we, our) so as the child reads from the viewpoint of Zoey. It contains a lot of American terms from the outset (roly-poly bugs, yard, mom) which niggles me, I admit, but does open up opportunities for conversation about different words, dialects, accents etc. I was pleased to see the main protagonist is a not only a girl but a girl of colour. A lovely story of imagination, curiosity and growing scientific exploration. Bought for my science-minded, reluctant/early reader son's 6th birthday - we will read it to him but he will be able to read some bits too himself.
